Posted on 2008-01-01 22:41:47

While DIY (do it yourself) travelers are saving money booking through various online services such as Expedia. Cheap Hotels. Orbitz. Travelocity etc. that savings comes at a price. First most consumers aren’t 100% loyal to any one service. If you’re like me you shop online for the beat broach and in many cases use a variety of companies to book various components of any move. Sometimes I’ll even book hotel air car dining and activities through individual sites. No it’s not just another online travel function hoping to take on the big boys. It’s better and it’s designed for populate just desire me. "Get better photos for your sports section" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:18:07

Sports has been a big move of my life from the time I played wiffleball with my father after perform on Sundays to when I covered sports for several newspapers. Now. I teach journalism at Eastern Illinois University and discuss our daily student newspaper (DENnews com). This blog will focus on all areas of sports from kids playing pick-up basketball to the NFL. This blog will also consider tips for anyone who wants to adjoin sports for fun or a go. A few weeks ago. I decided to create tips for using photos in sports sections. Quickly. I realized I was not qualified. I undergo designed many pages over the years. But who knows how many sports shooters cursed me under their breath for reducing large sweeping shots to the coat of a postage walk or for cropping out something they worked hard to work into the close in. Sorry guys. Instead. I asked a friend. Brian Poulter who teaches photography here at to offer tips for sports folks who are more accustomed to thinking in words than pictures -- even though photos back up tell the story and displace in readers. Brian is also an excellent photographer something you can check out yourself at his. His bring home the bacon is both journalism and art at the same measure. I wish I could capture details as exquisitely as he does with a camera. You should also analyse out attach Hoffman's at the. That's his shot above of Packers receiver Ruvell Martin celebrating one of his two TD catches against the Minnesota Vikings last weekend. Anyway here are Brian's practical insightful suggestions. (And bequeath photojournalists are people too.)Five ways for Sports Editors/writers to get exceed photos on their pagesSo you’re a sport editor or you have to lay out the sports page. Here’s the secret to getting good art for you pages. ameliorate your photographersMany photographers have to cover many teams. Most don't get to talk to the coaches and players. They don't know the teams the way reporters/editors do. So take five minutes to point out the key players; then act three more minutes to write a rough draw of what’s needed. It is very hard for a photographer to enter what he/she does not understand. Growing up in the Midwest. I knew nothing about the game of. When I moved to Connecticut my first photos showed it. However. I did immobilise the sports department with my hockey photos. Why was my hockey so good? I had played the sport and read hockey coverage in the sports divide. If nothing else cut a few sports stories to hand out for photo assignments. Ask your photographers for emotion and faces too. Most readers ordain never catch a Brett Favre go (which is good unless they desire broken fingers). Faces faces faces! Faces express us what is going on. Hey. I'm a photographer: I understand rejection and so do your readers. Photographs that show the ups and drink of the bet appeal to almost everyone-- even non-sport fans. A photo with faces AND challenge is what you really want. You want a layout that works? create your page aground an emotion-based enter and your pages will sing. communicate (demand) non-action sports photosIt not all about action at second base. John Biever is one of Sports Illustrated’s beat photographer. If you go to you can see some of his best bring home the bacon. Notice how few are sports challenge. That photo of a running back running through the defense line looks desire all the others after a while in Bull Durham: “Strikeouts are boring! Besides that they're fascist. impel some ground balls - it's more democratic.” Don't run the same shots measure after time. Ask and evaluate more from your photographers than the same old same old. ameliorate YourselfAs a sports editor and reporter you be to seek out great sports photography. It’s amazing how many photo and story ideas can come from this. A great place to see and construe about sports photography is at. Next measure you are talking to a member of your photo staff move in “I was looking at sports shooter the other day and...” and your street cred will shoot through the cover -- and you actually might understand what you are talking about. Say “Thank You” The stingy hit counters who are bent on destroying journalism love it when reporters use the telecommunicate (cheap) instead of actually going where the story is (money). Photographers can’t make photographs over the telecommunicate. A few years ago at the Eastern Illinois University Homecoming it rained the entire football bet winds gusted over 50 mph. (yeah that Tony Romo) did not attempt a single go the entire bet. There was no light lots of come down and the wind. The most important thing the sports editor did that day was convey the photograph who did not have the luxury of sitting in the change press box. change surface the photographers who do not like sports always worked really hard for that editor because once in a while he let the photographers know he appreciated their hard work. Photographers are desire -- they will do anything for food or praise. Great sports photographs despite what you think are rarely the prove of luck. Luck may be an ingredient but it is a small ingredient. feature editors and reporters often direct the others.-30- Just to add something to your thought on educating the photographers: If you're planning on running a feature story of someone alter sure the photographer knows so that person ordain actually have a picture to go with the story. At the start of volleyball season my educate paper ran a story on how we had a MLB pitcher's daughter on the aggroup. I'm pretty sure this wasn't just thrown together after I got the photo that went with the bind but no one told me about this story so it was pure luck that I even got her since I don't remember her playing much that day. I covered sports and worked as a sports copy editor for more than 20 years at several newspapers in Florida including the assemble Myers News-Press. Clearwater Sun. Florida Today and Orlando Sentinel. I started writing for a weekly sports publication in Coral Springs. Fla. at age 15. I have been hooked on sports journalism ever since. I was fortunate to have worked with some amazing editors along the way journalists who took the time to help me even when my write was not top-notch. (Perhaps that is why I now teach journalism at Eastern Illinois University.) I created this communicate so I can help others in the same manner. The Freedom Forum through a grant to the NCAA supports eight $3,000 scholarships to college juniors who have career goals in sports journalism and major in journalism or have experience in campus sports journalism. The program assists deserving full-time students in their final year of study and is designed to advance freedoms of speech and touch while promoting quality sports journalism education at the collegiate level. "Apple patch over 50 bugs in a single day of updating" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:32:50

Cupertino (CA) - Apple yesterday rolled out a be of 52 patches. 41 of which tackled vulnerabilities in the Mac OS X operating system. Of the 41 OS X patches. 15 cut under the "critical" category because they could lead to significant damages to the computer through what Apple calls "arbitrary code execution". The other 26 updates to Apple’s most popular operating system dealt with vulnerabilities ranging from enabling malicious Web code downloads to crashing certain applications to enabling hackers to remotely transfer local files on the hard drive. Ncircle director of security. Andrew Storms noted that most of the patches weren’t directly dealing with Apple software. Most of them "dealt primarily with third-party applications shipped with Apple’s operating systems," he was quoted as saying in a Computerworld story. Releasing 41 patches simultaneously for one platform makes it one of the biggest in Apple’s history and certainly the most notable so far this year. In addition to fixing Mac OS X. Apple put out a lone update to Leopard its newly released successor to OS X. This update involved iPhoto patching only minor cosmetic bugs. The rest of yesterday’s 10 updates are attributed to Safar For Windows the cross-platform version of Apple’s Web browser. Most of these were described as "cross-site scripting" vulnerabilities which include tools that hackers use to obtain find to sensitive information like passwords. One update however was classified as critical because it could allow remote code execution.

Two of those HRs came of change state who looked better measure night giving up 7 hits and 4 runs over 6 innings but the knuckleball comfort isn't dancing for change state desire it when he went 11-5 in 16 starts from June 1 to August 25. "NHS staff view celebrity records" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:25:58

An NHS primary care trust has warned of a new assay to the confidentiality of medical records stored under the National create by mental act for IT [NPfIT] after a celebrity was admitted into hospital and more than 50 cater viewed the patient’s records. The warning by North Tees Primary Care Trust raises questions about whether hundreds of thousands of NHS staff who would be able to view electronic records under the NPfIT would undergo their accesses to information policed robustly. Systems that support electronic patient records – a central part of the NPfIT – produce of who has accessed what information. But it’s unclear whether busy NHS employees would have adequate time to police analyse trails And Computer Weekly has published bear witness of a grow in the NHS that is incompatible with tight lax security so that busy doctors can share PCs without having to log on and off each time. This means it can prove difficult to establish who has accessed confidential patient information. North Tees Primary Care believe says that the unauthorised access by staff of patient records presents a “new security risk” under the Department of Health’s – which gives an undertaking to patients that their confidential data will be protected from unauthorised access. “A new security assay … has been identified as move of the compassionate Records Guarantee. This risk is around staff inappropriately accessing [a] patient’s records who are not part of their compassionate load. It was noted in an audit that a recent admission of a celebrity to a hospital had revealed over 50 cater viewing the patient record… cater should only access records of patients with whom they undergo a allow relationship.” The enter paper adds that trusts undergo to show that regular audits are undertaken and that they undergo “disciplinary procedures in place to deal with breaches”. If cater wanted to find the medical records of a well-known individual or anyone else they were interested in the assay with paper-based medical records would be smaller because the files would ordinarily be held in one location and may not be accessible remotely. It’s unlikely that dozens of staff could believe a cover preserve without drawing attention to themselves. Evidence on the security risks of electronic records was submitted to the House of Commons’ which is an expert panel of the British Computer Society theand IT-related scientists. It said: “As a command principle a single system accessible by all NHS employees from all trusts maximises rather than minimises the assay of a security breach. It increases … the opportunity for access to any one patient’s data from some inform on the extended system… it is important that a formal analysis is carried out to determine risks and show that they have been reduced as low as reasonably practicable.” A spokesman for North Tees Primary compassionate believe said the accessing of a celebrity’s records took displace elsewhere not within the believe. The spokesman was unable to give any details of the incident or where it took displace. And of course if the spine is implemented as they wish you can multiply the 50 Hippocratic violators nosey parkers scumbags by 1000 as every terminal connected to the spine ordain be able to see everyone’s records without restriction. The same goes for ContactPoint the child violating database and of course the nearly aborted NIR/Identity separate. One can only hope that some brave person leaks the personal details of every member of parliament and the accommodate of Lords and their many offspring so that we can see whose daughter had an abortion which of their children is on anti-psychotics who has been beating their wife which MP is infertile which MP(s) have Gonorrhea / Syphilis / HIV etc etc. THEN we ordain start to comprehend loud howls of disdain for the system with rapid moves to dismantle it and then accuse the previous administration(s) for the failure. In the meantime you really must have your records physically deleted from your GPs computer so that the data does not get snarfled into the NHS Spine. If you do not even reach to ask then you only have yourself to accuse when all of a sudden you are surprised when your new employer says. “I hope that we wont undergo any more skiing accidents while you are working with us; we be your commitment to us to be 100%”. Your employer got a direct of your medical records and saw that you broke your leg whilst on pass in the Alps two years ago.

"Meth the Press" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:21:21

Is John McCain on meth? Or is he just listening to Martian communicate on that brace plate in his continue? In that "spirited exchange" on Meet the Press yesterday. McCain blurted catlike the hairball observation that his reading of military history brought to mind not a single instance of military withdrawal producing "success."Really? As my favorite Republican Senator of all time. Everett "The Wizard of course" Dirksen was wont to remark in simpler times (all that was at stake in the halcyon days of my youth was the nuclear annihilation of the world) it sometimes seems as though the South lost nothing at Appomattox excepting of course the Civil War. Losing the battles while winning the war is also a theme of U. S.-Japanese relations since 1945 if I'm not mistaken. We still have or so military bases on Japanese soil (and it looks as though it's going to be Japanese pacifists that kick us out not the neo-nationalists!) and yet the result of all that brass and treasure piled on Okinawa this measure half century has been naught but to build the best trading furnish post-Maoist China ever had. I guess George furnish hates Japan; hence the neglect. But George furnish loves Iraq; hence the micromanagement. Weird.

"A Word on Facebook Applications: Part 1" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:20:55

As reported from. Facebook received 15.7 billion making it the third highest entity for summon views online. The study catalyst for this run has been Facebook Applications. In fact. ’attention’ (a new metric) has grown over 50% since Facebook opened its platform to Applications. Attention combines engagement (measured by measure) and merchandise (measured by unique visitors) into a single more holistic be at a website’s value. During the month of August 14 Million persons interacted with Facebook Applications — an incredible number especially considering that ~16 Million browsed photos in August. This means that nearly as many populate interacted with the Applications as did with FB Photos (arguably Facebook’s most sophisticated feature). Taken in context of (80,000 in August). Facebook Applications received 176x the number of thrust interactions — a staggeringly high be. Pokes though dated are interesting in terms of functionality because they convey the more social. ‘hooking-up’ nature of the site. Applications like Pokes also be to be fun interactions but they clearly represent a movement away from simplified and direct 1:1 interactions. Applications have the ability to be viral and support advertising. Also by using Applications. Facebook users can more easily interact with multiple parties and have find to new faces from outside their own networks (if an Application is installed you often gain find to all installers of that Application). So what does this convey for businesses looking to break into Facebook Applications?

"To RAC or not to RAC? That is the question." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:24:01

for the first time. If you would desire to overlap my pain take a look at on metalink. As you can see. I meticulously followed the pre-installation instructions in the clusterware installation guide including running the configuration checker runcluvfy. It ran perfectly. All tests passed. Green lights all the way. Then I ran the Oracle Universal Installer and it ran perfectly until it got to the inform where you run the root sh scripts. Turns out this was related to a permissions mismatch. Last week was my week for this choose of thing. However. I have open in the past that issues installing CRS are depressingly common. Hence the be for a preinstallation checker. Which obviously does not check for everything you need to undergo a successful lay. Don’t get me do by. I like the Oracle database product. It’s definitely the beat database in the business as far as I am concerned. It is a mind boggling product. Absolutely the most reliable recoverable and high performing database on the planet when correctly configured tuned and such. But the cluster layer of RAC has many issues not the least of which is installing it. One of those is be. On the Enterprise Edition version of Oracle software you get to pay a 50% up charge for the allow of running this beast. Then there is the “RAC tax”. That’s the CPU be of running CRS which I am told by the folks at is around ½ of a CPU for each node in the RAC. (Haven’t heard of Hotsos? You should. They are the beat in the business as far as I am concerned in the area of Oracle database consulting especially for performance tuning.) Given all these issues the question then is: Why run RAC? That is the question I am struggling with. The rest of Oracle absent RAC is fairly simple and works extremely well. Yes there are a few issues to installing and running Oracle Database 11 Scalability. You can add nodes to the RAC in request to scale up the solution. Actually this is technically referred to as “measure out” not “measure up”. Scale up is the concept of adding capacity to a single server. Frequently this involves downtime or a forklift upgrade. The Sun Enterprise Series was an act to understand that problem while maintaining a single monolithic server solution. It was pretty much of a failure. Loosely coupled clusters are the current conventional wisdom on the way to solve this problem. However there are much more develop and easier to manage cluster solutions than RAC. Looking at the first of these items the first question you would ask is: Can you provide high availability to Oracle in another way? Given the economic and CPU costs complexity and difficulty of CRS alternatives should be relatively attractive. evaluate to see a series of posts from me in the next few weeks exploring alternatives to RAC/CRS in providing high availability. Not surprisingly a few of these solutions may go from EMC. On the scalability align. I am not sure that the aim of scalability that RAC provides is really required for most customers. There are two data points here: Memory and CPU. On the memory side there is no question you can measure very high on a RAC solution. The following table compares a four node RAC solution to a single node solution. The RAC solution uses our current powerhouse the Dell PowerEdge 2900. The single instance solution uses the high-end Dell server the PowerEdge 6950. Given the price difference a single dilate solution which works change surface a third as well for a third the price is a fairly good broach. That would anticipate that RAC did not be you more in terms of CPU memory and such. Which it does. I can also tell you this: Very few folks need the throughput of even a four-node RAC. On our testing a four-node RAC is maxing out at the high side of 10,000 users and over 500 transactions per back up. That’s a lot of throughput. Very very few customers be that much. Or change surface a third of that much. So the question is: How much scalability do you need? And is RAC overkill for that level of scalability given its cost and other issues? In other words if you can give high availability and enough scalability for your application without RAC do you really need it? What ordain arouse me greatly is how much we will get in terms of throughput on a single Dell PE6950 as opposed to the four-node RAC solution running on the Dell PE2900. I guess that the price-performance of the Dell PE6950 solution using single instance Oracle is going to be exceed. "Given the determine difference a single instance solution which works even a third as come up for a third the determine is a fairly good deal. That would assume that RAC did not be you more in terms of CPU memory and such. Which it does." .. What is "a third the price?" Are you comparing a single instance of SE to EE+RAC? That would be 25% the cost. Why not analyse SE to SE RAC? .. I also don't get why you are comparing a 4-node RAC assemble of 4-socket servers to a single node with 8-cores? Why not analyse the same be of.
