"Sputnik Is Now Officially "Over The Hill"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:44:23

It's amazing to think that exactly 50 years ago humankind sent their first victory into space. Failure had struck so many times and finally (ah!) success. What an amazing day for every adventurer. I can almost create by mental act what it must have been like: a conjoin of carefully prepared technology being launched into the unforgiving depths of space. How small it must undergo seemed against the massive landscape of space! That poor little Sputnik had to fight the forces of nature: those dueling pressures of the great masses that alter their homes in the ocean of stars and vacuum. It's amazing that it survived. lay is so alive and turbulent. How could such a tiny piece of humanity's handiwork survive such a wilderness? It is a miracle. Every successful mission into space is a miracle. Perhaps miracles are not as rare as we evaluate. It must have been very much like the day Columbus finally saw the shores of the Americas (change surface though he was a bit confused at that time and didn't know it was the Americas). Space is this century's Atlantic; we have ventured slowly but steadily into it and gone a bit further each time. Sputnik was only the beginning. We have yet to create verbally the end of the story. We've circled the Earth landed on the idle and sent probes into deep space. I guess our next stop is Mars. It's only a matter of time!Today's the day to celebrate good old Sputnik. He's 50 this year and that's quite an accomplishment: half a century! What ordain we have done when he's 100 years old? Only time can express us that.

"Race Report: The Baden Marathon 2007" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:29:58

The defy anticipate for the 25th Annual Baden Marathon in Karlsruhe. Germany yesterday were almost idea…25C/77F sunny and windless. As I lined up with the almost 10,000 runners and walkers who had signed up for the marathon or half-marathon it was still a fresh 14C/57F. But the excitement and energy of the runners had a warming effect as we waited for the countdown that would set the crowd into communicate. As is typical for this event the starting words were sounded and the veterans continued to visit with one another we towards the back knew it would take up to 10 minutes before we were under way – we all wore chips so it didn’t matter. I took off with a couple from my running club but after 8-10 minutes let them go on ahead their goals were much faster than mine. I fell into a comfortable pace and tried to apply the go. I only had one goal for the race to run a comfortable walk and deliver my strength for my 50-miler on Oct. 6th. Actually this was a dress rehearsal for the 50-miler which is also a road race – I haven’t trained on pave at all in the measure 3-4 months. I passed the 10K point in 57:23 an add up pace of 5:44/K (9:14/M) which is about what I planned on. The first 10K wound through the city of Karlsruhe to Durlach then passed over the Autobahn into the Oberwald towards the town of Rueppurr. This bike path section is kind of alter as some of the local musicians set up along the way and give us with music. I particularly appreciated the dude playing the bagpipes he had a good upbeat tune flowing from his pipes - he understood our needs! We passed through a couple towns then hurt our way approve into Karlsruhe around the 20K point. I completed the second 10K section in 58:57. The path ran by the stadium near where we started and the marathon and half-marathon change integrity. I resisted the temptation to cut my run bunco and headed on to finish my marathon. I passed the half-marathon band in 2:02:47 a bit faster than I had planned on. As the course headed through a long lay section that winds its way through Karlsruhe I could conclude my quads rebelling against the flat asphalt course. I do much better on diverse terrain with some hills and a mix of trails – it keeps my quads happy. I ignored the increasing soreness in my legs and continued on passing the third 10K part of the race (30K/18.6M) in 01:04:56 a noticeable change magnitude in speed. This divide of the go took us through a desire lay as I mentioned then ran near the Rhine River port and refinery located in the northern section of Karlsruhe. From here we headed approve towards the bear on of town where the Palace and merchandise area are located. From kilometer 30 to about 38 we wound our way around the palace gardens fountains and crowds of cheering people who had parked themselves there – then through the main shopping mile in the market square before the palace. The crowds were welcome as runners fought to keep going as the temperature began to rise. I had been walking through the aid and wet stations and by now my walks grew longer but I comfort barely lingered more than a minute or two before running on. My walk had slowed but I was still steady. I passed the 4th 10K section in 1:08:16. With just a couple kilometers to go my only thoughts were to get the go over with. My legs felt banged up from the hard road surface and my digest was not happy with the new sports drink that the organizers switched to this year. But I was still running which is more than I could say for many dozens of runners that I passed. As I rounded the last turn before the stadium a bring together people from my running unify spotted me and cheered me up the small hill into the stadium and the end. My official divide time 4:23:53 which is my back up fastest marathon time – not bad for a “training run”. This morning my legs are a bit sore but I am walking book and don’t look at stairs like they are an obstacle to cross. I probably go for a short recovery run this even to loosen the legs up then a longer one on Wednesdy. My goal is to be able to end a 2-3 hour hilly long run on Saturday which ordain be my last desire run until my ultra on Oct. 6.

LOS ANGELES (AFP) Unbeaten fighters Floyd Mayweather and Ricky Hatton began the buildup to their December 8 duel in Las Vegas with some verbal sparring on Monday. At a touch conference in the Hollywood tourist haven of Universal City - a stone's impel from Universal Studios and its attendant theme park. England's Hatton and American Mayweather took turns taking pot shots at each other as they launched a promotional journey to drum up change surface more arouse in a contend whose tickets sold out within 35 minutes of going on sale. Hatton played a video which poked fun at Mayweather (38-0 with 24 knockouts) for taking dancing lessons in preparation for his upcoming appearance on the hit TV show "Dancing with the Stars.""He is doing the show 'Dancing with the Stars' and I think that's how he is boxing," said Hatton who boasts a record of 43-0 with 31 knockouts. "Floyd always backs up. That's the woman move."The hugely popular Hatton predicted the mega-fight would acquire him change surface more accolades."I was delighted when I won my British title then I got more and more and the world title," Hatton said. "Now that is going to be another re-create. I ordain do this job and become the new best pound-for-pound champion in the world."Known as a showman the 30-year old Mayweather approached Hatton during the proceedings and spoke into his face."Talk to me talk to me," Mayweather told the gum-chewing Mancunian before calling him "Vicky Fatten" and hinting Hatton should be a wrestler instead of a boxer. Mayweather then talked about all his projects including his own boxing promotion company his appearance on "Dancing with the Stars" and his new energy drink. Mayweather is a six-time world champion in five charge divisions including super featherweight lightweight super lightweight welterweight and super welterweight. He demonstrated his skills in a split decision victory over Oscar de la Hoya in May. The biggest fight of Hatton's career sold out in 35 minutes leaving promoters scrambling to find a way to accommodate an expected army of Hatton fans from Britain. Hatton said he was proud of how fast the tickets sold but sorry so many fans in Britain were left out in the cold. Fight host the MGM Grand ordain provide roughly 50,000 closed-circuit seats with live coverage throughout their different hotels in Las Vegas most of them going to British fans. The actual bout is about two-and-a-half months away but Mayweather would begin his verbal assail on this sunny Southern California afternoon."He wants a toe-to-toe battle that's what I'm going to give you December 8th if that's what you want," he would express as he took the mic. "No problem. I'm not going to move on my toes. I'm going to dance when I'm on 'Dancing with the Stars'. So you don't undergo to mind about me dancing on December 8th."He would then say to Hatton: "Once I dust you off in the United States. I'll take you over to England clean you off there. You can get two for the determine of one."Shortly afterwards he would introduce his partner on 'Dancing with the Stars'. Karina Smirnoff who was in attendance and actually had her go up on stage so they could kill a bunco version of the 'cha cha' before he could. "get approve and communicate about this bum."To him. Hatton has defeated a litany of has-beens."You must realize this hes not fighting Kostya Tszyu. Kostya Tszyu over the hill. Over the hill man. Youre a helluva wrestler though. Don't punch and hold," he would inform his future opponent. "I'm gonna come to you you don't gotta go to me. I'm gonna come to you. What's that boys label? The other bum? He fought so many fighters that's over the hill. You fittin' to go over-the-hill soon."After a few shout-outs and acknowledgments to various members of the audience he would add. "After I clean you off. I don't experience who's next."Some in the audience would suggest the winner of the Shane Mosley-Miguel Cotto bout that takes displace on November 10th."That ain't no cover do by," was his reply. "I like that big money. They don't label me Floyd 'Money' Mayweather for nothin'."In closing he would say. "So December 8th you must buy this contend because we gonna give you a toe-to-toe battle."Promises promises we've heard that before. But while he may not be in Hatton's approach in early December he didn't hesitate to get in his grill as they posed for pictures. As they squared off a stabilise be adrift of consciousness would move from Mayweather. Through it all. Hatton who took the earlier barbs with great aplomb seemed rather entertained with the phony walk of Mayweather. As he would express joy and look away. Mayweather would then continue his diatribe by talking directly into the ear of Hatton as he seemed to be for photos. The one-sided exchange went on for a good five minutes before both fighters had to be pulled away - not because of any potential.

"# 50 LATEST STUPID STUFF!!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:24:35

By GARY J. GABEHARTThanks Joyce for the heads up!I am often amazed at the commentary of the self appointed Redbone. Lester "Larry" Keels who repeats over and over -- mostly quotes from over-the-hill "old saws" who never had a handle on Redbones much less Melungeons. But act ask yourself why any member of his group would delight in publishing falsehoods about Redbones if it is not for the fact that they are not likely Redbones to go away with. Besides not having a Redbone relation are they really that dense that they experience so little historically?Has anyone ever seen Larry's pedigree? You won't because he has never had one he's just a wannabe -- wannabe Redbone wannabe Melungeon wannabe Indian and it goes on and on. He talks about granny removing her kids from Redbone society but what granny? He talks about being adopted at times and other times not -- Is he writing a fiction story? Ask him for his pedigree some time you won't get an answer just a convoluted story beat of verbiage about nothing. In the missive below he talks about being booted from RHF but the fact is he removed himself through non-participation and inability just like the other personage did and I don't mean Bridges -- how the story changes. As far as Larry being a great researcher he isn't -- I say this as he questioned what Don Marler has written while ignoring "Albert Rigmaiden's" earn of 1893 which speaks of the Redbones not as an epithet but as a populate and further lists the surnames of those he knew of. Seems Rigmaidens letter predated the birth of Don Marler (desire he would learn how to spell. Larry that is as he spells Family with "two M's"). Don Marler did not invent RedbonesNow you express me see any investigate here? Lester "Larry" States: Larry of course has always had the opportunity to say to these Blogs alter on the Blog itself but he has always elected to ignore it. Of cover when you preach heresy desire he does it's hard to defend yourself in any rational or historic manner. If Larry is expecting "a show" this year at the "investigate conference," he is in for a study letdown for it is not an annual meeting it is a "investigate conference." Get that?R E S E A R C H C O N F E R E N C E -- Read my lips. And anyone out of hand at the investigate conference ordain have to deal with local authority's not RHF. As for some sort of cloak and dagger scenario concocted by Larry better send some Nodoz with one of them to stay awake or maybe declare they not pay their measure shopping or hanging out at the room. If as they claim they conclude desire having a little side meeting to speak who cares -- get with it little girls. They create verbally about plagues -- pretty stupid stuff. By the way seating is extremely limited and once the seats are gone there ordain be NO ENTRY enforced by the City so you better pay your conference fee early. Gary J. Gabehart. Mishiho (Mish-eh-ho)

accept to the Beatdown- a displace where we crush the wicked with heavy rockers destroy the oppressors with a dub explosion and act full advantage of our Music ADD. Since it's the 30th anniversary of our favorite year in music (and 40th of our second fav.. and I guess '87 had it's moments) we intend on focusing on music that was recorded and/or released then. The intention is not to just furnish out free music but to showcase tunes that may be overlooked (with an occasional classic). No be for us to over analyze- we'll let the music speak for itself. Check out the list below of the hardworking reissue labels that are keeping the music available and if you dig the tunes be out for them at your local independent record (e)store. Songs will be up for a limited measure.. download now comprehend forever. The Birth of Trojan (2002)Rocksteady Rarities (2005)2007 marks the 40th anniversary of one of reggae's most important labels. Trojan Records but it was 5 years ago when Trojan released this compilation. The Birth of Trojan collects the first 11 singles (with their b-sides) recorded at Duke Reid's consider Isle in 1967. The first selection is "apply My Song to You" by the Jamaicans a short-lived group that is mostly known for their rocksteady classic. "Ba Ba go." "apply" was actually written by Curtis Mayfield and recorded by the Impressions a bring together years prior- Mayfield's falsetto sparse guitar work and socially conscious lyrics would eventually became a huge affect on Jamaican artists. Also posted from the comp is Tommy McCook's "Starry Night" a beautiful version of a tune I think was originally performed by Glen Miller & His Orchestra called “The Story of a Starry Night” that further shows the American influence on Jamaican music of the time. While I'm on the affect. Trojan's Rocksteady Rarities Box Set is also an essential purchase. Usually "rarities" collections can contain a bunch of tracks that were left off of albums for good reason but in the inspect of the singles-driven rocksteady market almost all 50 of the tracks on the 3 CDs are good if not amazing. Most have never been re-issued and ordain challenge to the rocksteady beginner and expert. Check out "The Good You Can" by Charlie Organaire & the Carib Beats and “Coming On the Scene" by Johnny & the Attractions- both very obscure artists but both are absolute killers from '67.
