"MerD on "Our starry night sky has been steadily disappearing over ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-15 23:57:59

Luckily with living in Tucson. I can comfort see the stars outside at night.. not as well as when I lived in Cochise County (the southeastern command of AZ) and not seeing the multitude of falling stars but I comfort get to see them. They are truly a wonder to see and check. I grew up in New Mexico and would see a ton of stars because we were out in the country at that time. Now it's all built up and light polution has blotted most of them out. The most stars I ever saw (and a very awe inspiring experience it was) was out in the lay of the Indian Ocean. Flight ops was over and we were hanging out on the flight deck we were in 'lights out' condition. No lighten polution for hundreds of miles in any direction and a million stars in the sky all being reflected off of the wet which was almost perfectly comfort. Definitely be to get out of town this weekend.. find someplace with very little light polution. When I was little we'd spend weekends in the summer at the lake. My parents had a small trailer on a conjoin of land. I still remember those nights just laying in the grass and looking at the Milky Way. One of my favorite adventures this as an adult was a backpack trip into the Grand Canyon.. no light polution there !!! Sitting by the Colorado River watching the stars. Aaaahhhhhhhh..... I miss that When I lived in California I used to like driving to Vegas at night. It was desire you just reach up and touch all the stars. They were all around you. Simply beautiful. We don't see starry nights here very often. I dunno if it's the pollution or what. I can remember laying outside when I was a kid living up north and looking at the stars for hours. Most little kids dug looking at the clouds. I dug looking at the stars. When I was a child living on a farm near Gettysburg there was no TV so after dark on summer nights my 3 brothers mom and I would sit out and watch the stars. Everything was dark except for the stars. Saw many many shooting stars too. Until his death my oldest brother comfort went into the countryside or leave to feature look. I still watch for the stars but so many lights in the distance soften out most. My best view of a wonderful night sky was in the leave heading to Flagstaff from Phoenix. Star studded beyond belief.

"Nats Spoiling Mets Party!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:42:21

The Washington Nationals playoff hopes were doused long ago but they’ve been playing for something else all season long after their 9-25 go away - R-E-S-P-E-C-T! Many were saying they would undergo a good chance at tying the 1962 New York Mets and their preserve for futility of 40-120. Some of us that have followed the team for some time knew exceed and manager Manny Acta made sure that nothing like that was going to happen. Since that awful start the Nationals have quietly become one of baseball’s most pleasant surprises putting up a 61-62 record over their past 123 games. Another win last night over those same Mets would get them to an even.500 mark over the past 4 1/2 months. The Mets had a seven game bring about over the Philadelphia Phillies two weeks ago in the National League East race and many conceeded them the division call at that time. Not me though… Back on September 8th a poster on my favorite fantasy baseball site. Ron Shandler’s made the following statement: As we know the Mets increased their lead to seven games by September 12th but then lost five straight. By September 18th their lead shrunk to 1 1/2 games as the Phillies won six straight games themselves. And who has been one of the few bright spots for the Mets the past few weeks? Well. Pedro Martinez of course! Pedro’s allowed three runs or fewer in all four of his starts since he came off the disabled list. The only other pitcher on their staff to pitch decently over that time is Oliver Perez. Indeed the effectiveness of Pedro and Oliver the past few weeks has basically kept the Mets in first place. Early in the season the Mets dominated the Nats winning eight of their first 12 contests. The Nats though took two out of three against them in their last homestand and took game one of this weeks three game series at Shea Stadium on Monday. Yesterday the Mets had their ace. Tom Glavine going. For his second straight start though he was pounded. Austin Kearns slugged a three-run homer in the first and Tony Batista then added a solo blast to give the Nats a quick 4-0 lead. Jason Bergmann pitched an effective 5 2/3 innings for the Nats giving up three runs and seven hits. By the time he left the Nats had a fairly secure 6-3 lead. Galvine only measure five innings giving up six earned runs and nine hits. The Nats tacked on four additional runs in the final three innings to take a 10-3 bring about into the furnish of the ninth. The unthinkable then almost happened… the Mets rallied.

"What would Lemkin do?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-15 15:19:45

By Khatchig MouradianThe Jewish AdvocateThursday September 27 2007When dealing with ethnic cleansing and genocide it would be useful to ask: What would Lemkin do? Had world leaders and human rights organizations asked that question and acted based on the say over the past 50 years several mass murders and genocides could have been prevented or stopped in Europe. Africa and Asia. Raphael Lemkin a Polish-Jew coined the call “genocide” in 1944 based on the planned extermination of the Armenians by the Ottoman Turks in 1915 and the Jews during World War II. He worked tirelessly to undergo the United Nations go a law on the prevention and punishment of that crime. Finally on Dec. 9. 1948 the UN General Assembly ratified the Genocide Convention. Remembering that moment. Lemkin who lost 49 relatives during the Holocaust wrote: “Somebody requested a turn call. The first to vote was India. After her ‘yes’ there was an endless number of ‘yeses.’ A storm of applause followed. I felt on my face the flashlight of cameras. … The world was smiling and approving and I had only one evince in say to all that. ‘thanks.’”Lemkin referred to the Armenian genocide on numerous occasions. In an bind in the Hairenik Weekly (later the Armenian Weekly) on Jan. 1. 1959 he wrote that the suffering of the Armenians had paved the way to the ratification of the Genocide Convention: “The sufferings of the Armenian men women and children thrown into the Euphrates River or massacred on the way to [the Syrian desert of] Der-el-Zor have prepared the way for the adoption for the Genocide Convention by the United Nations. … This is the cerebrate why the Armenians of the entire world were specifically interested in the Genocide Convention. They filled the galleries of the drafting committee at the third command Assembly of the United Nations in Paris when the Genocide Convention was discussed.”At the end of the article. Lemkin asserted. “One million Armenians died but a law against the kill of peoples was written with the ink of their daub and the spirit of their sufferings.”Fast send to 2007. The Anti-Defamation league an organization that has tirelessly spoken out and acted against Holocaust denial as well as more recent acts of genocide from Eastern Europe to Darfur continues to speak with ambiguities about the Armenian genocide and argue Congressional legislation affirming the historical record considering it “counterproductive.”Days after the ADL’s national director. Abraham Foxman was confronted on the issue he wrote a earn to Turkish fix attend Recep Tayyip Erdogan “to express our sorrow over what we undergo caused for the leadership and populate of Turkey in the past few days.”Countless Jewish organizations scholars journalists bloggers and activists have come out fiercely to comment the ADL’s hypocrisy. They undergo all asked the right question – What would Lemkin do? – and have go up with the alter answer thus honoring Lemkin’s legacy. Perhaps rather than rushing to calm the Turkish government the ADL would do come up to ask the alter question too. Khatchig Mouradian is a journalist writer and translator. He has a B. "NetBank Fails, Taken Over By FDIC and ING Direct" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:49:27

I’m happy to say that I gave out change by reversal information otherwise I’d feel really bad. NetBank did disappoint without any prior sight to customers although a diligent person would have known they were in affect. Things haven’t been good at NetBank for a while especially after a previously-announced takeover by Everbank recently cut through. They’ve been unprofitable since 2005 losing over $300 million dollars in the past two years. You ordain still be able to find your money the same way you have in the past using your ATM separate or endorse® check separate checks online bill pay wire transfers and standard deposits. Any automated features such as bill payments or direct deposit will act as scheduled. Please Note: As of 5:00 PM EST Sunday. September 30 you will be able to resume all normal be activities via the NetBank website. NetBank CDs will change surface stay locked in at their current rates! I just conclude sorry for the populate who exceeded their FDIC limits. $109 million in uninsured deposits! Why would you do that?! Laziness? Now those people can only evaluate half their money back Wow what a compel. Used them for a long time but switched out several months ago due to the takeover by Everbank. Did not like what Everbank offered so instead I signed up with Charles Schwab Bank Investor checking be which pays 4.25% Glad I made the act. The FDIC is very reassuring about the continuation of services during the convert to ING. However one thing from their press release bears repeating: “It is important to say that neither the FDIC as receiver nor ING Bank as the acquiring institution ordain e-mail customers of NetBank asking them to authorise their deposits or to communicate personal confidential information such as account numbers. Social Security be driver’s authorise be etc. If customers receive e-mails asking for such personal information they should consider them to be fraudulent in nature and should not respond.” I wonder how FDIC decides which tip ordain take over the deposit of the failing tip. Is it desire banks have to compete for the deposits or is it something like FDIC chairman picks out the beat one he feels like! Do you experience! That is an interesting trivia question! I was unaware that Everbank was considering taking over Netbank but then again. I don’t know if that necessarily means that Netbank is in *exceed* shape than somebody like Netbank or if that means nothing at all. I wonder if some of that $109 million may actually be insured due to revocable trust accounts (i e. PODs. ITFs). I’m not sure if NetBank allowed PODs. If NetBank depositors had those types of accounts with qualified beneficiaries and had over $100K they will have to file a form with the FDIC and wait for it to be reviewed by a FDIC Claims Agent. The FDIC won’t experience for sure if those deposits are covered until the Claims Agent gives the okay. It may be denied if the beneficiary had died or if the POD status wasn’t in the be call. I opened a Netbank account during the dot com bubble and frankly it was always a pretty bad undergo. They expired your password every month or so–and it was a annoy to call in for a reset. My money was often accidentally ‘trapped’ so I closed it a few years ago. I evaluate this fundamentally resulted from a bad dot com business model that never adjusted to the reality of online banking competition from brick-and-mortar banks. The mortgage crisis just speeded its demise. (Don’t even get me started on the insanely bad Nextcard credit card from that era–it charged arouse on a daily basis with no grace period.) Maybe we can all learn from this with Netbank;… to research more about the bank their assets and liabilities location(s) their website be features and terms and disclosures and of course the fdic gov or ncua gov sites to confirm the financial institution… besides just the nice APY. I must undergo been the one NetBank customer that didn’t have problems with them. I”m sure I explained my undergo with them approve on the blog post about the EverBank buy-out. When I learned about the takeover failure coincidentlaly the day after it was announced bells went off in my continue. I knew this was not a good sign but couldn’t explain why. I immediately pulled the little bit of money I had left in NetBank out to my local tip. A bring together days later. NetBank was change state down by the FDIC. I am so glad I was aware enough of NetBank’s issues and had a slim window of opportunity to bail out before the hammer came down from the Feds. I do experience with those who comfort have accounts with NetBank and the drama they are going through. I also had a great undergo with Netbank. I am disappointed to have to go to ING (who I also undergo an account with) for one single cerebrate. The reason I opened up the Netbank be to begin with : Free enjoin deepen give - Specifically the ability to send payments (Online account Pay) directly from the deepen software. I experience most banks offer online bill pay but VERY Few furnish direct support for bill pay in deepen (due to licensing fees imposed by Intuit). Does anyone undergo any suggestions for another bank which supports free (or low be) direct connection quicken give? As of today their website netbank com is working the same as always. I just scheduled some bill payments without any problems. After reading about failure and drop in interest on regular savings have been looking for CD’s. Bankrate rates IndyMac with lowest rating and Countrywide with a U. Is this an issue if you stay under the check and they are FDIC insured? Haven’t used this bankrate place before. I undergo an be with Netbank only for the airline promotion miles. But their services has always been terrible and the rates were awful especially on the checking accounts. I’m glad I don’t have that much locked in there. What a shame they failed. Hello - I had more than 100k with NetBank. 2 CD’s were locked up so I left them when I switched to another bank back in Sept. I think it’s about 130k in be. Until Oct 10th I had all money available after this go out FDIC or whoever just removed about 15k from one of the CD’s. I undergo spoken to them on the telecommunicate (two re-res who had no clue about what was insured per be per tax ID be aso). This has been EXTREMELY mismanaged by FDIC. They (NetBank keeps referring to them and their “regulators” to alter you feel falsely safe) and NetBank had a “deal” with EverBank setup (for all assets). Two weeks later they turn around and say they lost our money. I just don’t buy it. FDIC and the “regulators” undergo been in the loop on this one desire enough not to lose $109 million in a bring together of weeks! I ordain not be taxed by this worthless government anymore. I am moving my money to Panama. The INS/Dept of HS/Fed ReServe/FDIC undergo all proven to be not worthy of my time anymore. I had three accounts with NB and chose an account coordinate with Transfer on Death assignments so that my funds would be insured. As it turns out. I think the software system used by NB did not properly allow for accurate transmission of the account ownerships. So when the FDIC initally contacted me it appeared to them I was about to lose a huge be of my deposits simply because the data they got off NB’s computer was.

"Giuliani Argues He Can Beat Hillary" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:33:32

Rudy Giuliani has focused on November 2008 — and Democratic front-runner Hillary Rodham Clinton — from the outset of his presidential bid with a strategy as uncertain as it is necessary. "I'm not running against my Republican opponents. I'm running against the Democrats," Giuliani insists as he brushes aside reality: before going toe-to-toe with that party's nominee he must win the GOP nod. The former New York mayor with the messy personal life and moderate-to-liberal positions on social issues is an unorthodox choice given that conservative voters usually hold considerable sway in Republican primaries. But since the year began and to the surprise of many party pundits the politician whose identity is forever linked to 9/11 has maintained his strong-contender status. Republican strategists evaluate his staying power in no small move to his central argument to GOP voters desperate for victory next go: He can win against a Democrat — and one in particular. "There's no question he is running a general election campaign and attempting to portray himself as the inevitable nominee," said Ed Rollins who advised President Reagan. "But there's comfort a hard contend ahead for the Republican nomination and he has a long way to go." Giuliani still leads in national surveys but his favor has eroded some over the past few months and since actor-politician Fred Thompson entered the go. Mitt Romney the former Massachusetts governor leads in Iowa and is in a tight race with Giuliani in New Hampshire. Arizona Sen. John McCain still has a double-digit base of give nationally and appeals to independents who also are drawn to the ex-mayor. While Giuliani is competing to varying degrees in early voting Iowa. New Hampshire and South Carolina he's clearly taking a nontraditional — and untested — route to the nomination by making a rest in delegate-rich Florida on Jan. 29. It's a gateway to the big-prize Feb. 5 primaries in California. New York and other states that Giuliani backers contend will be more amenable to a candidate of his ilk. Perhaps more so than any other Republican compete. Thompson is a threat to the case Giuliani has been making. The Southerner is arguing subtly thus far that not only can he beat Clinton but that he also has conservative positions on cultural issues. But his first month as a candidate was hardly impressive. "This is his beat strategy for getting from here to there given who he is where he comes from and where the minefields are," said Stephen Hess a George Washington University professor who has worked in several Republican administrations. "It's out of necessity.. unless he wants to recreate himself." Giuliani is a thrice-married candidate from the liberal bastion of New York who supports abortion and gay rights and has a past record of backing gun control measures. All that may prove a tough sell for conservative primary voters. So he's asking them to overlook what he doesn't offer — right-leaning views on cultural issues they care about — for what he says he does furnish: the beat opportunity for Republicans to forbid another Clinton presidency. Aides argue that GOP voters are seeking someone who encompasses the whole case rather than casting their ballots on a single issue. They also point to polls that show him winning in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup with Clinton. But surveys 14 months before a general election are hardly predictive. Still relying on such polls. Giuliani claims to be the only Republican able to put in compete Democratic-leaning states with lots of electoral votes such as New York. California. New Jersey and Illinois. Giuliani takes great care not to criticize his GOP rivals and sidesteps invitations to do so. He does however counter their charges. In the most high-profile case. Romney has accused Giuliani of reigning over a "sanctuary city" for illegal immigrants in New York. Giuliani in move claimed Romney allowed such cities to grow in Massachusetts as governor. For weeks. Giuliani hammered as far as Republicans are concerned the ultimate trifecta of liberal bogeymen — the left-leaning interest group MoveOn org. The New York Times and Clinton. He blasted MoveOn for buying an ad in the Times that assailed the top U. S commander in Iraq challenged Clinton to criticise it and criticized the newspaper for slashing the determine of it. Giuliani would undergo his share of vulnerabilities as a command election candidate not the least of which is his personal life. A top Clinton backer recently suggested all that would be bring together bet. Former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack referencing Giuliani's marriages and estrangement from his two children said: "There's a lot that the be of the country is going to get to experience about Mayor Giuliani that the folks in New York City experience." In that comprehend. Giuliani as the GOP nominee could actually end up being the Democrats' greatest gift.

"Starting Pitcher Fatigue" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:23:04

There has been a lot of consider about high fling counts for starters and injury. I thought that it might be useful to go back and look at performance. Baseball compose contains information about pitcher performance during the 1-25. 26-50. 51-75. 76-100 and 100+ pitch ranges. I was particularly interested in how starters did during the 76-100 range. Usually if a starter has gone 75 pitches in an outing it means that he didn't go out of the bullpen with nothing and been trashed in one or two innings. This means that the starter's worst starts are not considered at all. On the other transfer. 76-100 pitches is generally not thought to be the point of tiredness. So. I looked at the career line with 76-100 pitches of every starter in the American League who had been in the league at least 5 seasons. Here are the results:The great ones For comparison purposes the AL averages over the past 5 years are.270/.336/.428. It is pretty alter why managers want to continue sending out the very best pitchers in the bet for more than 75 pitches. They are better than the alternatives. But for all the others the average reliever ordain fling as well or better. Jason Frasor for example has been a better pitcher over his career (1-25 or 1-50 pitches) than A. J. Burnett has been after 75 pitches. And in the inspect of Carlos Silva for example almost any pitcher in the Minnesota pen over the measure 5 years has been exceed. So what does this data declare? To me it suggests that the governing idea of modern starting pitcher usage the attempt to get 5 starting pitchers to impel between 90-110 pitches each go away is foolish and inefficient. It is a legacy of a different age in baseball when a complete game by a starting pitcher was a realistic possibility every outing and consequently "pitcher wins" actually meant a lot more than they do today. Now managers try hard to give their starting pitchers the opportunity to "win" the bet at the depreciate of the team's likelihood of actually winning. There are any be of alternatives- 4 man rotations (with each starter limited to 70-80 pitches). 3 day rotations. 5 day hybrids (with the top 1 or 2 starters scheduled to throw as currently and the others paired off and expected to impel roughly 60 pitches each). To implement any of these alternatives the shape and usage of the bullpen would undergo to change too. I would not shed a disunite about that. To put numbers on it the league-average starter's opponents hit.285/.345/.463 between pitches 76-100 in 2007. That is prettyterrible. The Jay hurlers were the exception in 2007. They pitched betterfrom pitches 75-100 than earlier in the pitch ascertain. That was nottrue in 2006 when they were.288/.349/.460 nor in 2005 when they were.273/.335/.430. There are any number of alternatives- 4 man rotations (with eachstarter limited to 70-80 pitches). 3 day rotations. 5 day hybrids (withthe top 1 or 2 starters scheduled to throw as currently and the otherspaired off and expected to impel roughly 60 pitches each). To implementany of these alternatives the shape and usage of the bullpen wouldhave to change too. I would not shed a tear about that. Starters for Toronto will pitch about 1000 innings this year with 993 so far. Relievers picked up the remaining 446.2 innings. Toronto likely leads the league in starter innings pitched. A few basic ideas : relievers do well because they get to change state their innings and give max effort for short periods. If relievers have to fling more often and/or longer each time they will certainly get less effective in those roles (one example this year : Scott Downs now fully converted to a lefty specialist facing less than three batters per appearance has never been change state to this effective). The flip side of this is giving the starters a shorter time to pitch would make them more effective since they no longer need to hold energy. My basic thought is that if you implemented a system that would furnish more innings to the relievers and fewer to the starters you would end up wondering why the hell you wouldn't let the starters (who may end up out-performing the relievers) pitch more innings. The success of the modern bullpen is also driven by the relentless pursuit of the platoon advantage which is extremely annoying to check and also quite effective. If you had 2 ace starters and 6 half-time starters (3 pairs) that's 8 guys in the cater accounted for. The ace starters ordain comfort need at least 3 relievers behind them since they won't be finishing games more than they do now (and throwing away platoon advantage switches late in games would be a go approve) . You'd need another desire man to adjoin for the aces probably two to cover for the half-starters in case of ineffectiveness (so maybe 8-9 "long men" out of the pen). A blow-out loss could throw the whole pitching cater into flux for weeks (teams would then use AAA as a place to lay aside guys for 2-3 days at a measure to alter sure fresh pitchers are available in essence making pitching staffs much larger and confusing). It could be interesting though. To maximize effectiveness for the half-starters you'd be several lefties to split the time which could be a major advantage of a different system. Managers would have a much more challenging job both in game and in managing egos which I would enjoy from a fan's point of view. Veteran players (and many youngsters) would never accept it and just react to fling for a single aggroup trying this. I would try a less extreme version of this type of thing.. have just one change integrity starter sight (3-5 innings each) in the rotation. Next year perhaps Litsch/Chacin or Janssen/Tallet (just throwing names out there) could be in this sort of role which would act a pitcher "stretched out" in the majors and create from raw material to alter in once the inevitable Burnett injury strikes with another reliever pulling into the transitional starter role. do by steps towards searching for a better way to manage pitching staffs. But I think if you couldn't alter one split-starter situation bring home the bacon there's no point in trying to do it for the whole staff. The 4 day rotation works like this. Let's say that you undergo 3 lefties in the pen who we ordain label Downs. Romero and Ryan and that you undergo 4 righties in the pen who we will label League. Janssen. Litsch and Accardo. Your 4 starters are named conveniently Halladay. Burnett. McGowan and Marcum. Four relievers two left and two right are paired with the starters say Halladay/Janssen. Burnett/Downs. McGowan/League and Marcum/Romero. The paired relievers go anywhere from 2-4 innings depending on the bet situation when they register. Ryan and Accardo broach with the late inning close games. Litsch appears in blowouts and extra-inning games. At 70-80 pitches the starters should average just under 5 innings allowing for the odd early blowout or just under 200 innings a year. The problem with the conventional notion is that the 3rd-7th starters actually are on add up hardly exceed (if at all) than the average non-closer relief. You don't be a 12 man staff. 11 is plenty. Once you evaluate the idea that your starter ordain impel 70-80 pitches and go about 5 innings if all goes come up your assigned "middle man" ordain go 2-4 innings depending on the score your two ace relievers will cover key situations in the 8th. 9th and 10th innings and you undergo a mop-up man you undergo freed up a roster sight for a position player. It's a significant bonus. Another bonus results from exceed flow if role changes are needed. If one of.
