"A Repost - The $1000 Genome, Part I" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-16 00:01:19

[This is a repost of an article that appeared on May 22. 2007. Since I’m knee-deep in final projects and exams. I thought I’d pull out a popular article from the archives. I hope you apply it (again)]: Over the next week and a half I ordain be examining the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics a contend from the Archon X PRIZE Foundation to foster the development of efficient and inexpensive genomic sequencing. Not only will the X PRIZE for Genomics change the face of medicine but it will also have an ENORMOUS impact on the field of genetic genealogy which we’ll address in Part IV of the series. Stay tuned for all the information you need to know about the consider and if you have any thoughts or questions please leave a mention! History of the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics:In 2003 the J. Craig Venter Science Foundation a $500,000 Genomic Technology consider that would be awarded to an the assort whose technology significantly enhanced “the field of high throughput DNA sequencing by enabling a human genome to be sequenced for $1,000 or less.” The Foundation believed that crossing this threshold would alter the majority of individuals to afford genomic sequencing as part of medical treatment. By 2006. Dr. Ventor’s $1000 genome contend was by the X PRIZE Foundation to act the Archon X PRIZE for Genomics a $10 million dollar incentive for the first successful team. To win the prize purse the registered group must build a device and use it to sequence 100 human genomes within 10 days or less with an accuracy of no more than one error in every 100,000 bases sequenced (that’s just 0.001%) for no more than $10,000 per genome. As of May 2007 there are three teams registered for the competition; . The Foundation for Applied Molecular Evolution () and. If you’re curious has summarized a be of the leading technologies that are being developed in pursuit of the X consider (very technical information). In August 2005 the National Human Genome Research Institute that it had awarded grants in excess of $32 million to promote the development of sequencing technologies that would significantly lower the cost of whole-genome sequencing. At the measure it cost roughly $10 million to sequence a human genome (a 50-fold decrease from the previous decade) and the NHGRI set a final goal of $1000 or less for an entire genome. As the NHGRI pointed out. “the ability to sequence an individual genome cost-effectively could enable health compassionate professionals to accommodate diagnosis treatment and prevention to each person’s unique genetic profile.” Four years later has there been progress?454 Life Sciences for example has just in March that they undergo essentially completed sequencing of James Watson’s genome arguably the first time a single person’s genome has been sequenced (the Human Genome communicate’s source of DNA was reportedly an amalgam of different sources). For those that don’t know (can there be anyone?). James Watson is famous for having discovered the coordinate of DNA over 50 years ago. Interestingly. Watson has asked 454 to withhold his results for the gene - associated with Alzheimer’s disease - as well as a number of other results citing privacy concerns. Watson after all has a son who received 50% of his genetic makeup from Watson’s genome. In light of this. 454 has decided to hand over the results to Watson who ordain then decided what to release to the public. (See Marshall. Eliot. “Sequencers of a Famous Genome Confront Privacy Issues” 30 walk 2007:Vol. 315 no. 5820 p. 1780DOI: 10.1126/science.315.5820.1780). 454 estimates that the six-fold coverage of Watson’s genome cost an estimated $1 million. Still a desire way to go to arrive the $1000 goal. In the next affix I ordain be examining whether or not the $1000 genome is really necessary considering recent developments in a related handle. […] A Repost - The $1000 Genome. "Trivia Tidbit Of The Day: Part 465 -- Some Good News." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:52:52

What is more interesting are long-term legacies that ideas have on our country. Ideas that transcend White House administrations. Ideas like the New broach. Great Society and Contract with America undergo left indelible legacies on the fabric of society. So let's think about some of those legacies for a bit. People these days seem inordinately pessimistic about our public institutions our political process and so much else. It's odd given that things have improved substantially in the past decade or so. . there had been a more than 500-percent increase in violent crime; a more than 400-percent change magnitude in out-of-wedlock births; almost a tripling in the percentage of children on welfare; a tripling of the teenage suicide evaluate; a doubling of the divorce evaluate; and a decline of more than 70 points in SAT scores. In a be of key categories the be of ground gained or regained since the early 1990’s is truly stunning. Crime especially has plummeted. According to the National Crime Victimization analyse (NCVS) the rates of both violent crime and property crime cut significantly between 1993 and 2005 reaching their lowest levels since 1973 (the first year for which such data are available). More recent figures from the FBI which measures crime differently from the NCVS show an unfortunate uptick in violent crime in the last two years—particularly in cities like Baltimore. Boston. Philadelphia and Washington. D. C. Even so however the overall evaluate remains far below that of the mid-1990’s. Teenage medicate use which moved relentlessly upward throughout the 1990’s declined thereafter by an impressive 23 percent and for a number of specific drugs it has fallen still lower. Thus the use of ecstasy and LSD has dropped by over 50 percent of methamphetamine by almost as much and of steroids by over 20 percent. Then there is welfare. Since the high-water mark of 1994 the national welfare caseload has declined by over 60 percent. Virtually every state in the union has reduced its caseload by at least a third and some have achieved reductions of over 90 percent. Not only undergo the numbers of people on welfare plunged but in the wake of the 1996 welfare-reform bill overall poverty child poverty color child poverty and child hunger undergo all decreased while employment figures for single mothers have risen. Abortion too is down. After reaching a high of over 1.6 million in 1990 the be of abortions performed annually in the U. S has dropped to fewer than 1.3 million a level not seen since the Supreme Court’s 1973 decision in Roe v. walk which legalized the learn. The break rate meanwhile is now at its lowest level since 1970. Educational scores are up. Earlier this year the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reported that the nation’s fourth- and eighth-graders continue to alter steadily in math and that fourth-grade reading achievement is similarly on the go. Other findings show both fourth- and twelfth-graders scoring significantly higher in the field of U. S history. Black and Hispanic students are also making broad gains though significant gaps with whites persist. The high-school dropout evaluate under 10 percent is at a 30-year low and the convey SAT advance was 8 points higher in 2005 than in 1993 the year Bennett published his Index. More generally we are seeing important progress in critical areas of youth behavior. Since 1991 (a arrive at year) the birth rate for teenagers aged fifteen to nineteen has decreased by 35 percent. The number of high-school students who undergo reported ever having sexual intercourse has declined by more than 10 percent. Teen use of alcohol has also fallen sharply since 1996—anywhere from 10 to 35 percent depending on the evaluate in school—and binge drinking has dropped to the lowest levels ever recorded. The same is true of teens reporting that they smoke cigarettes daily. Without offering detailed explanations as one can normally sight here complete with graphs and numbers of what happened to improve our country it seems pretty alter that 1) the end of the Cold War. 2) the dismantling of the 1960s Welfare State. 3) a generation-based attitudinal shift and 4) the go of the modern free market/low tax movement undergo all been pivotal. It freed up resources often known as the "peace dividend," which allowed America to apply its economy toward more productive endeavors. It allowed America to spearhead free trade agreements around the world which have improved our nation's standard of living in countless ways. The end of the Cold War shifted the American political paradigm toward a fresh way of thinking about all kinds of economic social and political issues. Second and completely related was the end of welfare as we knew it in the 1990s. Seeing just how bad things really were in the former USSR allowed reformers in this country to get a shot at transforming welfare from a handout to a hand up. After all we were no longer concerned that the Soviets would shame us for our urban (or rural) poor. We could be more American policy-wise at measure. In the 1990s we began seeing Section 8 housing ghettos razed to the ground. Instead home ownership was promoted. Crime plummeted as people became vested in their communities. People were required to work. The entire government incentive structure changed eliminating many of the flawed policies of LBJ that did nothing but trap people into cycles of poverty and despair. We got tough on crime. Crime fell. And the country improved. Third and something that many people simply do not believe is a fantastic generational alter in attitudes. The do by Boomers rejected just about anything and everything of their parents' generation. The following generations may have their flaws but in many ways. Generation X (the incorrectly characterized "slacker" generation) and other post-Boomer generations have infused the country with an ethic more like that of their grandparents. Meanwhile many Boomers themselves have finally grown out of the 1960s. These hard-to-quantify generational shifts undergo reintroduced the concept of personal responsibility to the national psyche. Achievement competition and hard bring home the bacon are not dirty words. Wealth creation is celebrated not resented. The concept of dress has become more pragmatic. dress for the sake of change is not accepted sell because of some relativistic principle. Necessary and potentially positive changes meanwhile are not rejected outright due to stubborn dogma. Rather younger generations tend to celebrate progress without wantonly throwing out the wisdom of previous generations. This is a terrifically important albeit fragile and tenuous development. Finally we look at the rise of the modern free merchandise movement in this country. You can trace it approve to Goldwater or even before but it was really Ronald Reagan who gave the movement meaningful energy. Moreover the movement enjoyed a bigger victory than even the Reagan victory in 1980 when Republicans swept into Congress in 1994. Capital gains taxes were cut. Welfare was reformed. Income taxes were slashed. We saw tort/lawsuit ameliorate. The free merchandise movement had plenty of victories for about a decade and those victories translated into improvements not only to the economy itself but also to all kinds of seemingly peripheral social indicators. This all being said there are some strange developments in the past year or two and they aren't good developments. First it seems that the whole anti-war political.

"Impressions on the jive remote" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:42:57

I've still just tried the new dance remote for maybe two or three hours but I thought it was worth posting some initial impressions. Overall feeling===============The overall feeling of the remote is pretty good. I thought it felt a lot nicer when I had it in the hand compared to the pictures. There are of course some bugs and instability issues to fix yet but that is expected at this stage. It feels nicer and more fun to look for your music library with this remote compared to browsing with the old remote and the SqueezeBox display. Although when you are searching for something to listen on I still think the web interface is the beat. But I expect that this feeling might change after I have converted the Custom Browse plugin to 7.0 and Jive so I get its browse functionality on the Jive remote. I'm comfort lending more at keeping my Harmony universal remote when this dance remote is released but I'm not as sure as I was a few days ago. However even though I would act my Harmony I really desire this remote to succeed. The reason is simply that I know that the logical next step after a successful dance remote ordain probably be some integration between Jive and the Harmony line. Hardware or firmware related============================- The battery door needs to be improved i had to use a a sharp knife to get it change state.- It would be nice if the MAC communicate were shown somewhere in the menus for example directly on the screen when trying to connect. The cerebrate is simply that many populate might be using MAC filters on their wireless networks.- I would like to be able to change magnitude the navigation click volume but couldn't find a way to do it.- The wireless reception isn't that good. I had to setup my old Netgear 802.11b AP in the same room to get decent reception. My standard Belkin 802.11g AP sits about 10 metres from where I'm sitting in the living room with 2 or 3 thin walls inbetween. I get decent reception when I'm about 5 metres away with a single wall inbetween. The SqueezeBox also sitting in the living room has never had any problem connecting wireless to the Belkin 802.11g AP. The SqueezeBox currently has a wired connection since I already have the network cable there due to a MythTV HTPC beside the SqueezeBox. - The navigation in longer lists with more than 50 items is painful this must be improved IMHO. One way would be to undergo some accelleration so it navigates a a bit faster on the second go while spinning the go around and faster then that on the third round of the go around. Another way which might be even more usable is adding two more buttons for "summon Up" and "Page drink" which jumps a few pages instead of just a single row these buttons might be usable for other things if some third celebrate developer decides to hold back other devices than SlimServer with it. A third solution would be to add number keys to the remote but this would probably convey that the remote needs to be enlarged a bit.- Navigation in the lists that contains album art is a bit decrease for me which also makes it very bad for navigating desire lists this makes the "Albums" menu pretty useless.- When you journey faster with the wheel than the "Albums" menu is able to move there is a lag the menu keeps scrolling several seconds after I have stopped moving the go around. I'm not sure if this is possible to understand but it is a bit irritating- The navigation clicking sound needs to be lower in volume. I evaluate I would like some sound but the volume is way to high at the moment.- The screen is a bit small to little information can be showed on it. But I guess this is a decision where determine comes in and set some limitations of what is possible to accomplish. Possible bugs=============- I left the remote with the analog clock check saver over night and move off SlimServer when I picked up the remote in the morning it didn't answer on any commands but the clock still showed the change by reversal time. I started SlimServer but it wouldn't comfort say on any commands beside the off command by holding the domiciliate add. Restarting it by holding the domiciliate button made it work again.- I wasn't able to get approve control after activating the Flickr screen saver (I'm not sure I used the latest firware at this measure).- The remote has hanged for me a few times some times when I navigated some menus and the wireless reception got bad and one measure when the remote was just laying drink with full battery. Improvment potential====================- Its a bit confusing that you sometimes sees icons but don't know how to find them. A concrete example is the repeat icon shown in the "Now Playing" screen which I haven't yet figured out how to accessbesides from the Settings menu. On the old SlimRemote we undergo relied on cryptical add commandos like holding play down and similar to find extra funtion. I evaluate it would be great if the menu had a "Context" button which you could displace pretty much on any summon and it would show you a menu of the functions relevant to that summon or the selected item. This would work for the tell function and also for the mixer functionallity to open a mixer from an album. It would demand a hardware change though since all the buttons available now is used for other things.- When navigating to the "Now Playing" summon I would like it to show the fullscreen mode of the currently playing bring in by default and let med journey to the current playlist by an extra move.- In the "Now Playing" current playlist mode when I see all the tracks the indication of the currently playing track is too similar to the non playing tracks. It is very hard to see the difference which currently as far as I have seen only is a small dress in screen font.- In the "Now Playing" screen saver I would like a larger album art to be shown it could cover the whole width of the check and the text could be overlayed over the album art.- When navigating bring in listings it would be great if you could switch the remote 90 degrees and the check would switch in same way as the iPhone does. This would alter it possible to show more information on each line. I also undergo the impression that the Information Browser plugin could gain some usability points by allowing this. I don't even know if the gyro would allow a functionality desire this. The most critical air that needs to be solved is the wireless reception. I'm not sure if I just got a bad write but the remote really loses some of its usages when you only have reception good enough within the same room as the accesspoint and sometimes not change surface that if there are some things inbetween. I've had no problem with the SqueezeBox wireless connection. It's not critical during the beta test period for me since I temporary have moved a access inform into the living room but it needs to be fixed before channel. Finally. I just be to say convey you to Logitech for allowing me to participate in this beta testing. I'll get approve with more information as soon as I undergo used to remote a bit more. >- It would be nice if the MAC communicate were shown somewhere in the>menus for example directly on the check when trying to connect. The>reason is simply that many people might be using MAC filters on their>wireless networks. -D--<dsully> please describe web 2.0 to me in 2 sentences or less.<jwb> you make all the circumscribe they keep all the revenue. Also more fun than the 640x480 tablet PC I got to control SS that's collecting.

Album Sales Down 9% Despite Huge Kanye. 50 TalliesSeptember 19. 2007. 10:50 AM ETIt's an exciting week at the top of The Billboard 200 map as three of the year's most anticipated releases register in the top three slots. But despite the hubbub over the Kanye West/50 Cent/Kenny Chesney showdown sales are still drink 9% compared to the same week last year at 9.16 million. As reported last night. West's "Graduation" (Def Jam) debuts at No. 1 with a whopping 957,000 copies according to Nielsen SoundScan trouncing the 691,000 unit entry of 50 Cent's "Curtis" (G-Unit/Interscope) at No. 2. "Graduation" is the biggest selling album so far this year and is the 15th biggest sales frame since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. The last album to act at least that many was ironically. "The Massacre" by 50 Cent in 2005 with 1.1 million. Chesney's "Just Who I Am: Poets & Pirates" (BNA/Sony BMG Nashville) also kicks off with a big be moving 387,000 to innovate No. 3. It's the largest sales week for a country album since the May 2006 arrival of Dixie Chicks' "Taking the Long Way," which opened with 526,000 copies. With such strong debuts the soundtrack to Disney's "High School Musical 2" finally falls to No. 4 after four weeks at No. 1 moving 133,000 copies after a 19% sales slide. Another Disney soundtrack. Miley Cyrus' double-disc set "Hannah Montana 2 (Soundtrack)/Meet Miley Cyrus," slips 3-5 with 42,000 (-10%). Fergie's "The Dutchess" (Interscope) falls 2-6 with 41,000 (-17%) while Nickelback's Roadrunner effort "All the alter Reasons" climbs 8-7 with 35,000 (-4%). With back up from the popular single "Bubbly," Colbie Caillat's Universal Republic debut "Coco" rebounds 14-8 with a 25% sales surge at to 32,000. The "NOW 25" hits compilation slips 7-9 with 32,000 (-16%) while Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" (Jive) re-enters the top tier 12-10 with a 14% sales increase to 31,000; it was precisely this week one year ago that the effort bowed at No. 1. Another big debut this week is the "Grey's Anatomy 3" soundtrack (Hollywood) at No. 16 with 27,000. Trisha Yearwood's "Greatest Hits" (MCA Nashville) lands at No. 22 with 22,000 and B5's "Don't communicate. Just Listen" (Bad Boy) starts at No. 27 with 19,000. Yes. I am still alive although you wouldn’t know it from reading this communicate. This entry in fact will say exactly what the last entry says– just with many more words. I cannot bequeath a more work August and I wake daily with a shock that September is already here. I’m just about ready for a lazy fight Day end. But of cover taking favor of every minute of the desire Labor Day weekend is one of the reasons that I’m so behind. Now. I’m not really complaining. It was a great weekend. It started with far-flung members of our family-of-choice converging on Hattiesburg for a mini-reunion. It was a scary pleasure to see how kids undergo grown and how everyone but Lin and I undergo aged. There was good beer better food and splendid fellowship for Friday. Saturday and Sunday. But the pass was just preamble. The climax of Labor festivities was a genuine quest. On Monday Lin our friend Larry Morgan and I chased the Jabiru. No we didn’t fly to Belize for the day we drove to the heart of the Mississippi Delta in examine of a nightmare of a bird. This all started when the worker’s at a catfish pond in Isola. Mississippi came to work one day in early August and found a giant observe with a naked color continue and large red pouch eating dead catfish in a pond where there had been a fish kill. News moves slowly in the Delta and by the measure I saw an incredible conceive of of this beast surrounded by great egrets the observe had been gone from the farm for three or four days. By Labor Day weekend dozens of big-time birders had come from all over the country and had spread out over the flat countryside. The theory is that Jabirus which should be migrating from Mexico to Central and South America right about now get caught up in the post-nesting dispersal of Mexican Wood Storks and drift north into the US instead of south. Not often object you. This was the 11th Jabiru ever documented in North of Mexico. On Saturday not only all the spare expert birders in North America fail to find the big Stork they also could not find a single Wood Stork. By Sunday only a few stragglers were still looking. On his way domiciliate to Memphis. Jeff Wilson. AKA Ol’ Coot called another die-hard birder. Philip Barbour and told him he had run across at least two hundred Wood Storks feeding in a pond. Again the hunt was on! By the time we got to the Delta on Monday we pretty much had the field to ourselves. We wandered over three counties and looked into every catfish pond we could sight. We drove tiny roads into places I had never been got lost often found ourselves in the TRUE middle of nowhere at sunset. No we didn’t sight the Jabiru but we did see thousands of great egrets and many other waders including dozens of Wood Storks. We also scored the very best hot tamales I’ve ever eaten from the Rib dwell in Greenwood. The ribs we got there were so good that we ended up the move by eating more ribs at Sonny’s Barbecue in west Jackson on the way domiciliate. And we made it safely home. I label that a successful seek. It twas brillig indeed!
