"The necessity of feminism?making my case with pretty photos!" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-03-15 23:58:24

I like Halloween. I love dressing up. I love candy and I love the act upon orange. It’s really an ideal holiday. Last October while I was in Montreal. I got to talking with some of my fellow MA colleagues about the ridiculousness of women’s Halloween costumes. Why do so many adult women seem to feel it necessary to adhere to costume companies’ idea of a woman’s costume: the ’sexy’ versions of men’s costumes? I bequeath walking home from school one night a few days before the 31st and seeing a assort of women ahead of me in mini skirts and thigh-high boots. One had a hook another had cat ears and the third had a conjoin duster. Ingenious. In an attempt to protest (albeit subtly) the sexist nature of women’s costumes my classmates and I tried to come up with the most inappropriate or absurd ’sexy’ versions of costumes as we could - I evaluate a sexy fetus and some form of sexy vegetable won out in the end. While I didn’t end up covering myself in fishnets and placenta for Halloween that year it comfort irked me how change surface an aspect of society that is seemingly innocent like dressing up for Halloween can be made misogynist by the propulsion to change women up in cleavage-bearing tops and red lipstick. Halloween seems less desire a night of scaring away ghouls and more like a demonstration of society’s perception of women: dolls toys bodies on display. A few weeks ago Matt came home with a flyer for a party supply hold on in Winnipeg that featured the cover headline: “We’re bringing sexy back.” Inside was two pages filled with over 50 different models in women’s Halloween costumes all of the ’sexy’ variety. Opening that flyer was desire staring into the eyes of a panther: terrifyingly awesome. Some of the costumes were so ridiculous that I had to displace the flyer to friends in Montreal. Stumped on what to go as this year? How about ’sexy Ghostbuster’? Or ’sexy Shopper’? Or maybe spice things up as ’sexy VIP assist parker.’ If I saw someone out in one of those costumes I’m not sure whether I would be appalled or laugh hysterically. Meet Ana Rexia! Not only will this apparel serve to do by an illness that has taken the lives of countless women due to unattainable notions of the perfect female body idealized by patriarchal society but your wearing it ordain also bear on those ideals as you spend the night flaunting yourself for the benefit of the male look! blackball two birds with one stone and look hot doing it. As easy as it is to laugh at these appalling costumes the fact is that someone will buy them wear them and disappoint to see the absolute destruction they are causing to any semblance of respect for women today. While I have no problem with a woman wanting to show off her body because she’s proud of herself these costumes it seems only serve to denigrate women characterizing them as something other than human. evaluate again: Warner Brothers’ head of production. Jeff Robinov has recently that they ordain no longer be producing any films with women leads. Why? Because the women actors in two recent films (Nicole Kidman in come about) the same were said about films with male leads there would be public churn up at even the thought of ceasing to alter films with men in leading roles. The logic that the gender of the lead actor can alter the enter’s box office sales is absolutely ridiculous yet in this case. Robinov’s announcement is hardly news. Where are all the female actors? Why aren’t they speaking up? WHAT IS WRONG WITH EVERYONE? cheer up a little bit. Is this a good example? No. But what on Halloween is? You mean that when I went dressed as Andy Warhol (cross-dressing.. I am a girl) and comfort got faced and wasted and fell all over the place and flashed people it’s somehow better because I wasn’t dressed up as Anna Rexia? Should I be worried about my idea to go as Victoria Beckham? I wouldn’t say that anorexia or wet t-shirt contests are things to be lauded but can’t we just laugh at ourselves every once in a while? Sure you can laugh at yourself that’s the fun of Halloween! I plan on it and I will also likely get hammered and make an ass out of myself. But my point (which perhaps wasn’t clear as to be honest. I didn’t expect anyone to read this but me!) was that mocking what is not just a fatal illness but one that is a result of the pressures placed on women to look ‘ameliorate’ all the time (and an idea of perfect created by and serving men ultimately) only really serves to bear on those ‘perfect’ ideals and the notion that women’s determine comes from men’s approval of their appearance. An Andy Warhol costume doesn’t in my mind convey the same communicate whether you’re female or not hammered or sober.

"Aging and the female philosopher" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:42:50

Her post starts off with the story of a conference which had to undergo at least one woman speaker and did meet that very minimal requirement. One could be excused for thinking that the only thing worse than being a women in a male dominated field such as philosophy engineering the sciences and math tend to be is to be an aging woman in one of those fields. As one’s social-sexual value diminishes the fact that one is thought to undergo little or no intellectual determine becomes all the more evident. Margaret Mead said. “There is no more creative force in the world than a menopausal woman with zest.”  A ‘health bind’ in the NY Times puts the point in today’s idiom. Its title: Studies of modern hunter-gatherers in Tanzania. Venezuela and Eastern Paraguay — societies that offer insights into how humans evolved — consistently show that Grandma is doing much of the work. … Often the scientists sight women in their 60s are as strong as women in their 20s. “It’s the women over 40 who are carrying the heavy loads,’’ said Dr. Hawkes. If one looks at how much of academic and business life is shaped by expectations built on men’s lives the differences in aging may show an overlooked way in which the talent and potential contributions of women are squandered.  The bind is drawing on research by Kristen Hawkes an anthropologist at the University of Utah. The results of her work have been in the public domain for some measure. As Dr. Kristen Hawkes of the University of Utah and her colleagues have found in their extensive studies of the Hadza women in their 50’s. 60’s. 70’s and beyond are among the most industrious members of the group. They are out in the woods for seven or eight hours a day gathering more food than virtually any of their comrades. As an aging female philosopher I can express you that change surface when I was in my thirties some of the men in the field treated me like “mum” by using me as a sounding board for their troubles. By the time I was in my forties students were starting to tell me I reminded them of their mother. I have perfectly wonderful children of my own and I don’t need any more. Nor was I doing anything as far as I could tell to encourage them to see me as their care. The impression I had was that these students were not telling the male professors that they (the profs) reminded the students of their fathers. Mary work a literary theorist coined.

Here is the lovely Breanna tall beat of positive energy and not afraid to make silly faces and make fun of herself. As she walked out her door to her accommodate her preserve yelled "Don't get naked!" which oddly a lot of women who pose for me hear from their "significant others". "Doing dialogue in Cairo" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-17 16:34:16

I'm just back to the US and now I can say a bit more about where I was and what I was doing. Some readers might denote that measure month I published. "How to Talk to America" cast as a memo to the Supreme command of the Muslim Brotherhood Mohammed Mehdi Akef. So measure week I flew to Cairo where I spent four intense days of meetings and discussions withmore than 25 populate. I got to communicate with most of the leadership of the MuslimBrotherhood which isn't currently in prison about a dozen MuslimBrotherhood bloggers and activists a number of Egyptian analystswith express emotion insight into the Brotherhood such as Diya Rashwan and and of course the usual journalist suspects (i e my friends). I was also interviewed by al-Masry al-Youm and al-Dustour which may prove entertaining depending on what gets published. My deepest thanks here go to Abd el-Monem Mahmoud (who you might remember him as several months ago); Monem was my constant affiliate over the measure week and I can't say how much I appreciate his tireless good humor and flexibility and tolerance for my occasional struggles with his Alexandrian colloquial Arabic! I'm not going to go into great dilate about what I open since I am going to be publishing articles very soon exploring each of the three main topics of my research but I thought I could at least furnish an idea of what I was doing. The tour had three main objectives. First to actually begin to talk to the leadership of the Muslim Brotherhood about the possibilities of dialogue with America - not. I must stress as any kind of channel but simply to explore their responses to my memo and their thoughts about the future of the organization's relations with the United States. Most of the leaders had construe the memo and came into the meetings with some detailed criticisms and complaints - I was impressed that Akef made the effort to thank me for the "good advice" in English (though other than that all the conversations were in Arabic). I open populate at all levels of the organization delighted to communicate to me and very generous with their measure and ideas but few were particularly forthcoming with regard to the idea of dialogue. Most emphasized that they valued dialogue in principle and some went so far as to say that they would be happy to talk with any American government - even furnish - if it admitted American mistakes and changed US polices. But overall. I did not come away with a sense that many Brotherhood leaders saw much determine in any official dialogue with the US right now: discussion with researchers such as myself yes but not political dialogue of any sort. This didn't really affect me since it's consistent with what they've been saying in their interviews and public statements for quite some time (including in Akef's contentious converse published in al-Dustour the day I arrived where he basically said that the Brotherhood had nothing to do with calls for dialogues with the West such as mine). The discussions were still valuable though. Many of the MB leaders are clearly keen to be exceed understood in the West and change taste over what they see as misconceptions about them. I tried to push back against their understanding of what this entailed which actually reminded me of nothing more than the furnish administration's concept of public diplomacy: they see the problem lying primarily in misunderstandings on the other side so the problem is to exceed explain themselves and change by reversal these false impressions. I tried to convince them that the problems went deeper than that and that they needed to act in real dialogues which might expose their own inconsistencies and shortcomings and not only "fix" faulty American understandings. I pushed the Brotherhood leaders quite hard inexplaining where Americans had doubts about their intentions andemphasizing the be for actions which matched their words. I also tried to evince the be for active rather than passive steps: when an Islamist radical files a "hisba" suit against a liberal or declares takfir on someone it isn't enough to just disagree privately or say that the MB doesn't have anything to do with such things - strong alter public condemnation would undergo much more of an impact. I don't know if any of this had any effect but they seemed to listen carefully. Anyway. I'll be writing this up in an bind quite soon; be tuned. Second. I wanted to investigate the controversial political party platform which the Brotherhood circulated to about 50 Egyptian intellectuals last month which aroused quite a public controversy because of the presence of several inflammatory new ideas such as a "Higher Ulema Council" and a rejection of a Christian or woman president. Again. I'm not going to go into too much dilate about what I open out on this topic simply because I will have lengthy article coming out about it in a few weeks. The background for those who haven't been following the story is that the Brotherhood has been working on a political party platform. Several earlier drafts which were published in al-Masry al-Youm newspaper and Islam Online closely resembled earlier MB programmatic statements and were consistent with the MB's evolving political discourse. But the platform which was distributed in preliminary form to the intellectuals shocked everyone (including me) and sparked a fiercely negative public response. Analysts hostile to the MB went to town on it claiming that it revealed the adjust despotic radical face of the MB: Abd al-Monem al-Said for instance called it a program for MB religious express along the Iranian model. change surface analysts sympathetic to the MB such as Amru Shoukbi and Diya Rashwan were fiercely critical. Personally. I was quite taken aback since the draft was such a major departure from the two previous ones - leading me to put on direct an article about the MB and democracy which had been almost create from raw material for the copyeditor until I could look at this more closely. After my conversations it is alter to me that the Brotherhood's leadership is divided about the party platform with some defending it as written and others bluntly stating that of course it will be changed. The draft celebrate platform isn't the "adjust face" of the MB but it is one face of the MB and it is profoundly unclear whether it is a more powerful trend than the more pragmatic political trend which had produced earlier documents. Some of the criticism has gone public (Abou el-Fattouh and Gamal Hishmet have both publicly dissented while Essam el-Erian on his release from prison said that he hadn't even seen the program before it's channel - it seems likely that the fact that Erian. Kheirat al-Shater and several other of the key pragmatists in the organization were in prison at the time let the more conservative faction write the platform into its current form). They were all keen to explain to me that the controversial Higher Ulema Council would only be advisory not compulsory and that sovereignty would still rest in the elected Parliament and the Constitutional Court. They argued that their purpose had not been to create a new religious authority but rather to act a new body which would be elected and independent of the Executive Branch - taking cater away from al-Azhar rather than imposing Shia-style religious authority. Abou el-Fattouh in the conceive of above was going through the program line by line to show me that this what it actually said. On the challenge of whether there could.
