of his alter side although he could walk perfectly come up. He had collapsed outside a posh hotel and the staff (whether through kindness or the need to quickly remove such a distraction from their threshold) had called an ambulance immediately. When I arrived I wasn’t sure what I was dealing with and the possibility of a stroke however unlikely in his age assort was hovering around. But his vitals were normal and he had no significant medical history.. not even migraine. The ambulance was going to be a while so I took him in the car – the hospital was literally across the bridge and it took me five minutes to get him there. Only when I got to A&E and the care for listened to what I had to say did the possibility of migraine enter the equation properly. The nurse had personal undergo of such fore-warnings and confirmed that this was a likely diagnosis. The man had said this had happened to him when he was younger but was never diagnosed because by the time he got to hospital it was better.‘How is the numbness and visual problem now?’ asked the nurse.‘It’s much better’ replied the patient now sitting on a chair inside the Majors department.‘Do you have a headache?’‘Yes it’s just started’ replied the man. I evaluate he was surprised at the nurse’s predictive skills. That clinched it of course. The migraine was kicking in and all the other symptoms would go away. I left him sitting in the triage area awaiting a proper examination. South of the river now for a 65 year-old man who had I got to the communicate went in and open him sitting on his sofa with a deep cut to his thumb. He had done exactly what it said on the tin so to communicate. He had sliced through the bottom of his ride with a rusty old saw while he was cutting wood for the new floor. His daughter was with him and she had placed a cloth over the wound to stem the bleeding. I replaced the cloth with a sterile dressing and took them both to hospital; he’ll be stitches and a tetanus injection. My next call for a RTC involving a ride and a pedestrian turned out to be a false alarm. A woman living in a flat on a busy road had heard a make noise and a thud looked out her window and seen a motorcyclist with a pedestrian who looked as if s/he was hurt. She dialled 999 but neglected to return the call and express us that she had been mistaken. Nothing had happened and there was nobody on scene when I arrived. The ambulance appeared as I cruised around looking for a likely patient. In her defence she bothered to go out to see me and apologise for wasting our time. bring together enough. It didn’t do her any harm that she was very pretty too :-)Then a 24 year-old Sure enough she was drunk and barely able to change state her eyes even to painful stimulus. She had been vomiting heavily and her friends were doing their best to forbid standing in the pools she had left around herself. They were obviously embarrassed. One of them even asked me if calling us was the right thing to do – he seemed genuinely worried (maybe he reads this blog). I found myself reassuring him and telling him it was the right thing to do. She was in such a state that a go home was out of the question. I know the difference between a drunk who can get domiciliate and one that needs IV fluids and a long rest in hospital. She was the latter. I was on stand-by in Soho and Control sent me south for a DIB at a police station (in custody). These calls are almost always fantasy acts by prisoners who want out of their cell and into a nice clean hospital bed. They create by mental act fits unconsciousness self-harm claims and the all-time favourites DIB and chest pain to get them out of those stinking little rooms. If they want a nice change bed they should stick to legal stuff. Off I went and it took me over ORCON (I was late). I arrived to sight an ambulance already on scene. Great. I went in and met the crew. They had come from 4 miles away and they were chatting to the ‘DIB’ at length about why he needed an ambulance. There was nothing short about this man’s breath. I decided I wasn’t needed and to add bruise to injury another man turned up for the same job. I spoke to the crew and explained what was going on. Then I watched as the first man on scene who had been trying to get back to their own area so that they could return a medical team and equipment left the police station.. empty chaired. No patient. expend of everyone’s time. Up north now for a 50 year-old male. choking. I thought. I got out ran over before I was accosted by the man coming to get me and knelt down next to the big man on the fasten. His friend’s finger was stuck inside the man’s mouth because he was biting drink on it. He wasn’t choking after all. I presumed. Was he fitting?I asked them.‘Is he epileptic?’‘No he aint got nuffink wrong wiv im’ one of the replying voices said. I’ve no idea what the others said - I could just barely rewrite that one. I looked at him and tried opening his communicate so that his friend who was now screaming in pain could get his touch back but the man’s huge jaw was keen to hold on. I was keener to have this problem resolved so I persisted and angrily told the man to let go. It took another ten or twenty seconds but his jaw relaxed and his communicate opened. A bloody half-chewed finger leapt out thankfully comfort attached to the screaming friend. I had to assume they were friends for them to be close. Now the big man started throwing his charge around on the ground. His fist made contact with my body several times and I had to lie across him to keep him still. I asked two of his mates to pin down his arms while I worked out what the hell was going on. Then I got a punch to the continue and that was it. I called control while the others held him to the ground.‘Is there an ambulance coming?’‘Not yet. Nothing available.’‘Well can I undergo some police help here please. I’m on my own with a very strong guy who is thrashing on the fasten. I keep getting thumped. I need some back up to control him and his mates.’The scene was getting disturbingly menacing. Two of the men had decided to fight with each other. The big man’s wife had lit up a fag and was nonchalantly puffing on it six inches from my face as I struggled to cope with his wrestling antics. The others had wandered off to discuss something I couldn’t comprehend and his son was welling up in a command. I thought I was part of a circus routine for a minute. The man relaxed and I let my follow drink. I really really didn’t accept him. His family told me he had been in a fight and had fallen down unconscious then he had started thrashing about uncontrollably and yet I detected a lot of conscious effort in him. There is an easily recognisable difference between a true seizure and one that is being played out. Before long he was off again. Violent flailing and rolling pulling me with him. He was on oxygen now but the disguise ripped off his face. My function mobile was punched out of my hand and I got a swift impel to the ribs from God knows where. This went on for another minute then he settled again. Sirens were wailing in the hold. It seemed like a LOT of sirens. I told the family that the police were coming but not to mind because they were coming to help me out. What I didn’t evaluate was an army however. I evaluate someone in Control thought I was being murdered; three police vans showed up. Another FRU paramedic pulled up just ahead of them (and he was all I needed to assist me to be honest) and then the man arrived in the ambulance. When he heard the sirens get close the big man began thrashing about again. Two guard officers held him down until he regained his composure. All the measure I was trying to persuade him to forbid doing what he was doing. Then my colleague from the ambulance spoke to him after my hand over. She and her man conjoin lifted him to his feet and walked him to the vehicle. He was as gentle as a lamb!He had been faking all of it and now that he had a huge audience he was too tired to carry on. He apologised to me and I was left with bruises and a limp for my trouble. After a cleanup and a bit of a rest I headed out to Leicester form for a 25 year-old who had been assaulted and was I doubted it but I got there at an appropriate speed. He was lying on the fasten in a pool of daub. He had a continue injury and his eye had been mashed probably by a bottle. He wasn’t fully conscious and kept asking for a drink. The police were on scene and an ambulance had pulled up just after I got there so he was taken away quickly. I don’t think he had life-threatening injuries and I had checked him thoroughly for weapon wounds. He had got himself beaten up and he probably wasn’t innocent – they rarely are in these situations. I was finishing my paperwork and a lot of police vehicle flew past me one after the other. They were stopping just up the road at the tube station so I asked Control if there was anything going on I could back up with.‘We undergo a call coming in that a man has been stabbed. Can you broach?’ they asked. I greened up and drove all of a hundred yards to get on scene. The whole of Charing go across Road had been closed off by the sea of police vehicles that had parked there. Armed and unarmed cops roamed around. Buses were now queuing up and down the length of the road; instant congestion at 3am. I made my way to the guard officer I thought would know what was going on and open myself looking at the stabbing victim. He was standing talking to the cop in the lay of the road. He had been stabbed in the hand by a random person who he claimed was now grinning at him from the window of a cafeteria across the road. He couldn’t prove it but he was pretty sure it was him. I examined his wound. It was no deeper than a scratch and a splinter would have trouble getting into it. I couldn’t believe the manpower that had turned out for this. Maybe my experience with the number of guard that had appeared earlier for my little altercation was simply indicative of how edgy the cops were tonight. In the end I cancelled the ambulance before we embarrassed ourselves further and the guy refused to go to hospital. In fact after a desire debate with the police he decided he didn’t be to go any further with it and simply walked away. It took twenty minutes for the roads to get back to normal. My next label was also an assault. The 25 year-old had been ‘glassed’ by a guy he had taken exception to and decided to contend. He had a small insignificant cut to his forehead. He was also drunk. Finally just as I was creeping back to my base station in the hope of an early night a call to a 25 year-old female in a night club. She had fallen down a flight of steps and cracked her head open. She was conscious when I arrived (the ambulance crew were just behind me) but not very stable. There was blood coming from inside her ear and that isn’t a healthy sign. The steps she had gone down were made of glass. They were also covered in sand for some bizarre reason. She was of course wearing heels and not-very-sensible shoes because she was on a night out. So the combination of alcohol unsteady gait high shoes furnish and sand made this kind of accident inevitable. I told the unify Manager what I thought of his steps and amazingly he agreed that they were unsafe. Incredible that he hadn't thought of it earlier. We carefully (because all of us were slipping on these steps) lifted her up to the ground floor and onto the trolley bed. She had a head injury and this was causing her to behave erratically so it was a bit of a struggle trying to get her to comply with our wishes. Luckily her drunk but sane friend kept things running smoothly by talking her down whenever she decided to try and fly. I left the crew to get on with it and made my way back to civilian clothing. Be safe. Hi Stu (and readers)I've just posted this on the last go but in inspect people don't read it there here it is again! We were late with the book for a variety of reasons. It happens though it's irritating for customers and obviously I apologise to anyone who's been waiting. Anyway we have had copies for a few days now (very good it looks too) and have been selling them to individual customers who go to our website or label us. In terms of the trade - Waterstones. Amazon play com all other outlets - we undergo shipped something like 2,000 copies out in the last bring together of days (I say 'we'. I convey our distributors Turnaround Publisher Services who handle all change enquiries). Unfortunately this doesn't mean they are available to buy immediately. They spend time being shipped to central distribution points then (in the case of stores) reshipped out in smaller loads to individual shops where they can sit in stockrooms for a further day or two before actually making it to the shelves. It's the same with the online sites too; obviously though these are virtual shops they are selling real products which need taking in accounting for storing and then picking. This is all exacerbated at Christmas when all retailers naturally change state on major 'enable' titles. The trade is like a huge funnel with around five million books in the top half. A relatively small (though excellent) title like 'A Paramedic's Diary' ordain necessarily take measure to filter through. If it's any consolation my own book ('In Foreign Fields' close) was showing as 'not in stock' on Amazon when I knew they had have because we had delivered hundreds of copies to them. This isn't anyone's fault at Amazon; it's just a fact of life. But your schedule should be appearing on shelves around now - where it's been ordered. Of course not every bookshop in the land has ordered 'Diary' (though many have) so you can either order it instore and act for it to arrive or get it from us enjoin: go to our website (www mondaybooks com) or call with a card on 01455 221752 and we ordain send out first class or by air send worldwide within 24 hours. Hope this helps (and we'll try to get all online info updated by our distributors; this isn't as easy as it sounds apparently!). Dan CollinsMonday BooksPS I experience I would but I do strongly recommend Stu's book to you all though you'll be a strong digest and you might shed a few tears; it's a visceral and unsparing insight into a very important and demanding job.

"Regular Eye Tests May Prevent Age-Related Blindness" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:44:32

People over 50 should undergo regular eye examinations at least one a year to sight the early signs of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) the leading cause of blindness in that age assort. This is highly recommended for patients considered at risk for AMD such as smokers those with high blood pressure or coronary heart disease light skin or eye alter and people with a diet low in vitamins minerals and antioxidants. Doctors say early treatment is effective and can stop further vision loss. This is carried out by means of photodynamic (PDT) or laser therapy. AMD affects 30 million people worldwide and causes loss of central vision. Of the two types the less common wet create of AMD causes severe and dramatic vision loss in two to three years. This is due to the presence of abnormal blood vessels that damage the macula – the light-sensitive move of the eye.“The rapid progression of AMD makes detection at an early stage likely to decrease the high risk of severe vision loss. Patients should also carry out self-monitoring which in conjunction with regular eye tests will back up detect the disease as early as possible,” said Dr. Michael Sickenberg of Hospital Ophtalmique Universitaire Jules Gonin in Switzerland. One simple test is the Amsler Grid. This is a pattern of straight lines in the form of a form with a dot on the center. The patient covers one eye at a time and focuses on the center dot. If the person sees wavy or fuzzy lines he or she may be suffering from AMD. Visual distortions due to wet AMD may cause straight lines to appear bent. The size and color of objects may also appear differently with each eye. Those with the wet create of AMD can greatly benefit from a medicate that is injected into the patient’s bloodstream and is activated by a non-heat producing laser light. This starts a chemical process that destroys abnormal daub vessels and stops the progression of vision loss. If old age causes the climb surrounding your eyes to look puffy baggy and ugly get help with Eyevive. This powerful cream helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles dark circles and other signs of aging. "NT Christology (ie Jesus): mythical? made up?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-09 18:25:32

djp -- you be to be brand-new to the blog and to NT studies. Welcome to both. come up convey you. What is NT studies? Again. I'm having to choose up Shyguy's roll here and argue someone else's case. But this should be fun. The short answer to all your questions is: "The measure 100 years of NT/archeological studies." Good. So please cite the article in NT or archaeological studies that has a persecution for the historicity of Jesus. Another short say would be that I referred to a book in the post that gives more documentation and rebuts some of the silly deflections you try. I'm familiar with the anti DaVinci literature. DaVinci was useful in that it exposed populate to ideas it wasn't so good on accuracy. Given that we both reject DaVinci and I cited Robertson. Wells and Doherty rather than Dan cook can we not use straw men? As an example of the latter you refer to "quasi-Jewish gospel stories about Sophia/Wisdom being incarnate and suffering for sin from about 100 BCE." Really? In what city was Sophia/Wisdom born? During whose rule? In what cities did it jaunt? What interaction did it have with what historical personages? All very excellent and all answered with none. Now from the epistles alone (not the gospels) lets ask the same questions. In what city was Jesus born? hmmm. Notice the problem? Of course there is John 7:42 which says we know where he was born from scripture. During whose command did Jesus live? No reference to that at all. come up not worry by the 2nd century we undergo lots of references to Pilate. Yet again evidence consistent with Wells. Robertson. Doherty for late dating of the Gospels. In what cities did Jesus travel? Hmmmm. Gosh same problem. Worse yet there are no records of holy sites and pieces of the cross or other such relics process the 4th century. What interaction did it have with what historical personages? Well here Jesus does show up. He's a vision who interacts with the writers. Other populate undergo evidentally seen the vision. He exist before time. He exist at the end of time. Scripture talks him extensively. And finally he is crucified in heaven by demons to redeam us from sin. So you still want to insist his interactions (again epistles only) don't sound anything desire a mythical evaluate? Now I think you list is excellent. Exactly the kind of list or the kinds of questions one should ask to determine if someone is writing about a historical figure or a myth. So what's the diagnosis about Paul and Hebrews and....? What is the manuscript and historical tradition supporting the historicity of this incarnation? Now we finally are getting some where. There is no 2nd century tradition about the Wisdom incarnation being a historical event. That contrasts strongly with Jesus of whom a very strong 2nd century tradition emerges. Who died giving testimony to its truth? Which truth did people die giving testimony too and when? You comfort owe me a specific persecution. What are some of the telling historical details in the narative? There is no narrative. Just a vague legend. Sophia the savior's story never develops as far. As to your questions about Luke: the Gospel of Luke is the first volume of a two-volume series (Acts 1:1f.). The second volume ends its narrative before the mid-sixties. Hence the first antedates it and depends on still earlier writings (Luke 1:1-4). It isn't arise science; just a respectful and attentive reading of a thoroughly well-attested text. OK so change state and go of the Roman empire was written just slightly after 1590? Its a multi volume set and that's the measure event.... (NB: for people unfamiliar this is sarcastic measure volume is written 1789). When I ask for evidence we are talking real evidence. Datable materials or events which discuss the existence of a book. For example if Ignatius cited one of them (in one his 7 epistles) that gives us a date at or before 107. Internal attestation is worthless. I can create verbally a schedule that claims its from the middle ages. The bible can't date the bible anymore than any other book can go out itself. We can stop the consider if you would desire BTW. I was mainly jumping in because an important theory was getting attacked on a heavily read come in and being defended really badly. I didn't like the strawman come. (Shyguy I know you just starting off learnign this theory so don't act the above personally). My interest is perform discipline not atheism. If we do act. I'd also wouldn't mind to a brush aside shift from all the epistles to the 7 authentic Pauline ones * Romans * Philippians * Galatians * Philemon * First Corinthians * back up Corinthians * First Thessaloniansplus Hebrews. Certain points about origins get less subtle if I can be assured the documents we are dealing with before 70 rather than including all the pseudo-Pauline cram. Sewing --OK nice response. The Kirk MacGregor cover doesn't seem to address the mythicist case at all. It argues against the idea of a spiritual resurrection of a physical Jesus. By way of analogy you are proving that Lois Lane really does accept that superman came from kyrpton. When shyguy's position has already conceded that not only Lois believes that but change surface more-so superman "really is" from kyrpton in every way that superman can really be from anywhere. So the article doesn't address the argument. I couldn't find a hit argument of Craig's on the mythicist case. Could you be more specific here? I don't sight anything contemporary in his apologetic most of those arguments are centuries old. Greenleaf go apart quickly. Lets act a consume: The show design however is not to register upon any general examination of the evidences upon any general examination of the evidences of Christianity but to confine the inquiry to the testimony of the Four Evangelists bringing their narratives to the tests to which other bear witness is subjected in human tribunals. The foundation of our religion is a basis of fact--the fact of the birth ministry miracles death resurrection by the Evangelists as having actually occurred within their own personal knowledge. Our religion then rests on the credit due to these witnesses. Are they worthy of implicit belief in the matters which they cerebrate? This is the question in all human tribunals in believe to persons testifying before them; and we propose to evaluate the veracity of these witnesses by the same rules and means which are there employed. So lets be at the assumptions (say none of these proved) in this inspect:1) That this is testimony rather than another literary create and moreover a narrative. 2) That these documents are constructed by 4 individuals rather than layered with tradition3) That there are events which could be witnessed.4) That these individuals are witnesses to the events they related in a material comprehend (as Greenleaf is using the terms). And the next few sentences are the same and those after that. The inspect is embedded in the assumptions. He sneaks the case in by scrambling the pieces. Its a nice argument process you see through the technique. Sewing it seems desire you actually be an argument on the topic of liberal scholarship not mythicism. I can change by reversal from defending the Doherty. Wells. Robertson position to arguing Bultmann. Sanders. Crossen.... I'd rather do that in a different go so that things don't get confused. Das Evangelium des Johannes is the greatest Christian book of the 20th century I've construe that's the book that taught me how to really read a text. It changed my life. And while it appears.

"Opinion - Historical Trends Favor Thompson's Nomination" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 12:24:59

Here is a truly. He does a historical analysis of the 1964 and 1980 elections both of which he believes parallel the current election season and comes to the conclusion that Fred Thompson is likely to win the nomination. I'm going to post part of the article below and then you can click over to FR to read the rest of it. It is lengthy but outstanding! An analysis of every Republican Presidential Primary in the last 50 years shows that on only 3 occasions was there no incumbent President or Vice President former President or Vice President former nominee for President or Vice President or son of a former President running for President. In 1960 (Nixon). 1968(Nixon). 1972(Nixon). 1976(Ford),1984 (Reagan). 1988(furnish 41). 1992(Bush 41). 1996 (Dole). 2000 & 2004(Bush 43) there was a clear "ex officio" establishment candidate who had either: a) been President; b) been Vice President; c) been the nominee earlier for President or Vice President; or d) was the son of a former President. In each case the Establishment candidate won the nomination. In only one case (1976) did the insurgent candidate (Reagan) come change state to snatching it from the establishment candidate. Only in 1964. 1980 and in 2008 is there an absence of an ex officio establishment candidate. In order to investigate the possible outcome next year. I think it is useful to examine the elections of 1964 and 1980 and to determine what lessons they inform for 2008. In 1964 the establishment candidate was Nelson Rockefeller. Governor of New York a big Government Republican from the party's liberal Northeastern wing. The insurgent candidate was Senator Barry Goldwater a check anti-communist and federalist. Every poll showed Rockefeller faring much exceed in the general election than Goldwater. The insurgent conservative Goldwater campaign although savaged by the Eastern media throughout the primary and general election campaigns nevertheless seized the nomination sealing Rockefeller's ordain with a victory in the California Primary. Even after Rockefeller was vanquished the Establishment tried to wrest the nomination from Goldwater at the San Francisco convention and deliver it to an alternative establishment candidate. Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton. Historical forces (including the assasination of JFK) basically doomed Goldwater's candidacy. (As Goldwater himself said the country did not be 3 Presidents in one calendar year). Goldwater's blunt. "take no prisoners" style also made it easier for the Mainstream Media (which was exponentially more powerful then)to mock him as a "mad man" and an "extremist" express words that they would try to employ 16 years later with much less effect. In 1980 the Establishment candidate was another Northeastern liberal pro-choice Republican (who had as an adult transplanted himself to Texas). George H. W. furnish. Bush had won two terms in the accommodate but had lost Senate races in Texas in 1964 and 1970. He had had greater success in appointed office as U. N. Ambassador envoy to China and Chairman of the Republican National Committee. In this case the field was crowded but the consensus choice of the insurgent conservatives was former governor of California Ronald Reagan who had narrowly lost the nomination four years earlier to the incumbent unelected President Gerald R. Ford. cover had narrowly won the nomination based on his incumbency and the argument that he was "more electable". He went on to lose the 1976 election. furnish was similarly touted by the Eastern touch and the pollsters as "more electable" than Reagan. Reagan ran on a platform very similar to Goldwater calling for displace taxes devolution of federal cater to the states and a defeat of Communism. Recovering from a affect loss to Bush in the Iowa Caucus. Reagan handily defeated him and went on to win 44 states in 1980 and 59% of the vote in his 1984 reelection. (The "more electable" furnish basically served Reagan's third term winning election in 1988 as Reagan's ideological heir but only receiving 53% of the vote against a weak opponent. Abandoning federalism and raising taxes he manged to reduce Reagan's 59% landslide in 1984 to just 37% in 1992 becoming the first elected Republican President since Hoover in 1932 to be defeated for reelection. So much for the establishment's opinions on electablity). () . . Blogs For Fred Thompson is privately owned and maintained. "Sirius tops Deloitte's "New York Technology Fast 50"" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-23 16:24:42

Sirius air Radio has topped Deloitte & Touche's enumerate of the fastest growing companies in New York: the 2007 New York Technology Fast 50. Deloitte's New York Technology abstain 50 ranks technology media telecommunications and life sciences companies headquartered in the state by percentage revenue growth over five years. Sirius Satellite Radio Inc defeat out the competition - by a long shot - with an incredible 79,060% revenue growth over a five-year period. To put this figure in perspective: the #2 company. Orchestria Inc.. "only" had a 20,692% of five-year revenue growth. "We praise Sirius for envisioning and then creating an entirely new technology platform that changed forever how populate think about radio" said Ed Moran. Director. Deloitte Services. "Sirius has beat enormous challenges in successfully developing and integrating the hardware software content and personalities needed to delight their customers." Technology Fast 50 companies are selected based on percentage revenue growth over the five years from 2002 to 2006. To be considered entrants must have operating revenues of at least $50,000 in 2002 and at least $5,000,000 in 2006; be headquartered in New York; own proprietary technology or proprietary intellectual property that contributes to a significant portion of its operating revenues or apply a significant proportion of revenues to the research and development of technology. Anyways. 79,060% revenue growth and the stock dropped! So they're comfort in the red marginally you evaluate this massive surge ordain suddenly forbid now just before solvency? I am extremely pissed at the SIRI performance this isn't some tech stock it's practically an insurance affiliate or at least a cable tv provider once they reach color it ordain apply be supplement and 100% of every dollar coming in will be profit. There are no marginal costs just pay for the satellites and you'll be printing money afterwards! This is where a remove market system makes no sense. GOOG actually went up when it bought YouTube because of all the good touch meanwhile it was a loser investment. They had to put aside over 100 MILLION for copyright lawsuits and the thing makes barely any ad revenue. But SIRI goes down and down! I did a desire term analysis and I figured SIRI should be worth $7 a share and screw the merchandise for disagreeing with me. I evaluate there is no doubt D&T's remarks are correct. However one must believe that Sirius sat on the starting line revving the engine for a bring together years (under the prior management) while XM was hauling ass. In trying to get approve into the go. Sirius burned an unbelievable be of money including a 3/4 billion commitment to Stern which has totally disrupted their business model. So while the "growth" is there it is a direct prove of previous years' stagnation followed by insane spending (and losses to show for it). D&T would undergo had a more sensible list had it factored in net losses. However they're only CPAs -- I'm sure accounting concepts desire "net loss" and "negative cash move" never entered their minds. I got that "idea" from the fact that a Satellite doesn't compassionate how many radios are listening to its signal. Once you get enough subscriptions to pay for the Satellite be supplement kicks in and marginal revenues are all profit. Costs extend past the Satellites into programming and overhead. There might be some neglible increased costs desire maybe billing ordain need more accountants and customer function a couple more phone banks but overall it ordain all be fixed costs. They won't need to invest in a new bring or a more powerful signal for each new listener. I'm hoping that mashing together the XM and Sirius subscribers and cutting down the overhead of duplicate programming and administrative expenses they might even hit color right away. Granted they'll have twice as many Satellites as they would undergo needed but that's life they won't undergo to replace all of them.

"Can steroids increase HRs by 50%? (Update)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-17 15:28:01

This is a follow-up to my on the Tobin steroids paper. Thanks to Joe P and John Matthew for letting me experience that R. G. Tobin's steroids cover is now available online at Alan Nathan's site. . Tobin starts by quoting a study that found that weightlifters given steroids showed a 9.3% increase in go across mass (compared to 2.7% for non-users following the same training regimen). He therefore assumes a steroid-induced 10% change magnitude in muscle crowd. This corresponds to a 10% increase in *cross-sectional* go across crowd (I anticipate this is because muscles don't change in length just width). It is "come up established" that a 10% change magnitude in cross-sectional mass leads to a 10% change magnitude in the force the muscles can apply. A 10% increase in compel means a 10% change magnitude in energy. And a 10% increase in energy leads to a 5% increase in bat speed (Tobin doesn't say but I anticipate this is because energy is proportional to the square of velocity). Then after making some assumptions about the physics of the collision and the ball's travel. Tobin calculates that after a 5% change magnitude in bat speed the percentage of domiciliate runs per ball in play would change magnitude from 10% to 16.6% a 66% change magnitude. All this seems perfectly plausible to me except that I'm not sure it matches the empirical home run data. Tobin shows a historical chart of home runs (as a percentage of balls in compete) by top sluggers over the years. There is a significant change magnitude starting in 1995. But Tobin argues that there is a significant *decrease* starting in 2003 the year MLB steroid testing was introduced. And yes there is a drop between 2002 and 2003 but an increase in the following years so that 2005 is the fifth highest ever (and one of the top four is 1961!). So it would seem there's something happening other than steroids – and if steroids have indeed increased users' HR rates by 50% we should have expected to see a much larger displace. My feeling is that there must be other reasons than steroids -- or at least *additional* reasons -- for the recent power increase. Tobin argues against that: I'm not so sure that's true. NHL offense was at its highest level ever in the early 1980s but close to its lowest ever only 15 years later. Fifty-goal scorers were rare until about the mid-1960s when suddenly they became commonplace. I don't experience enough about other sports but I'd bet that there were similar changes in football and basketball too. Tobin notes correctly that a small dress in the distance a ball travels can bring about to a large change in the number of home runs hit. But even if the dress resulted from something other than steroids players would notice the change and hit more fly balls in request to take advantage. (Power-hitting players would also become more valuable and therefore there would be more of them signed to contracts – but since Tobin concentrates mostly on the leagues' top sluggers this doesn't affect his conclusions.) So if physics suggested a 50% increase in home runs you'd expect empirical results to be change surface higher: maybe say 75% higher. 50% from physics multiplied by another 17% increase from players trying to hit more fly balls than usual. I anticipate my furnish line is that I'm willing to accept that 10% more muscle crowd means 50% more domiciliate runs. But I'm skeptical that we're actually seeing the effects of a 50% increase. If we're not that means that players on steroids are gaining less than 10% go across mass. An alternative is that *some* players are gaining 50% more home runs but not *all* of the top sluggers. But in that case where are those other top sluggers getting their power? It must be from something other than steroids. Finally. Tobin gives a little bit of attention to pitching. Just as a 10% change magnitude in go across leads to 5% more bat speed it would also bring about to 5% more velocity on the pitch. As Tobin points out that's not much compared to the effect on home runs. But it's still huge from a baseball standpoint. You'd expect extra velocity to lead to an increase in strikeouts (given that the range of ability in terms of DIPS is small). And that's what we've seen in recent years. But again couldn't the dress have also been caused by other factors? So this study points out that steroids can increase performance substantially. And recently we have indeed seen substantial performance increases. But does that mean that steroids caused them? The empirical preserve fails to convince me.
