Geezer whose over 50 soccer team swept its division measure season is unclear about why it took so long and a team of Danish researchers to figure out that playing soccer is better exercise than jogging. Jogging? Geezer has to laugh that a chew over conducted at the University of Copenhagen evaluated the effects of three hours per week of soccer,jogging or no exercise among 37 randomly assigned sedentary males. After 12 weeks the paper reports subjects in the soccer grouphad lost 7.3 pounds of fat as measured using specialized X-ray imaging,compared with 4 pounds among joggers (there was no change in thecontrol group). The soccer group also gained 3.7 pounds in muscle,while the joggers did not obtain measurably in go across. The Times reports that both groupslogged significant improvements in insulin sensitivity as measured byan oral glucose tolerance test and in fit as measured in severalways including a one-legged fit test. Both groups also hadsignificantly lowered heart rate during a treadmill test. Thesoccer group posted a significant reduction in so-called "bad" LDLcholesterol while the jogging group's cholesterol was unchanged (HDLwas not significantly changed in any of the groups). And finally thesoccer group's sprint time was significantly better while the jogginggroup's scores were unchanged. The hold back group showed no changes in any of the measurements.

Although the definition of "jogging" is vague I'm guessing that if you changed the "jogging" into a more robust running routine (including speed bring home the bacon) the results would be a little closer. Still the attraction of soccer is it's a heck of a lot more fun. If it was't for those old-age injuries...
